The Position
The Senior Director of Data Strategy for Novo Nordisk Inc., (NNI) leads all data strategy activities for the commercial organization dand coordinates alignment across multiple functions to foster value creation by means of the organization's data assets and external data ecosystem. This role sets direction for the newly formed data strategy team within CI&A (Commercial Insights & Analytics) based on a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges, business strategies, competitive environment, and emerging opportunities for NNI. This role leads and inspires a team of direct reports to develop data strategy and governance aligned with commercial priorities. This leader will build a team that delivers value in partnership with several functions across the enterprise ensuring policies and best practices exist and are followed for high data quality and compliance across all areas. The role is accountable for development, employee engagement, and organizational / data driven culture.
Relationships
The Senior Director of Data Strategy for NNI is a key member of the CI&A LT, reports to the VP, Insights & Analytics and interacts with key stakeholders across the business. Key relationships include Commercial Operations, Information Technology, Sales, Marketing, CMR (Clinical, Medical, Regulatory), Procurement, Legal/Compliance, MAPA (Market Access & Public Affairs), etc. External relationships include consulting partners, data providers and market research partners.
Essential Functions
Creates vision, mission, and operating model for newly created NNI Data Strategy team, including points of interaction and influence across multiple elements of the business
Oversees multiple aspects of commercial data sourcing and generation. Responsible for inventory and catalogue of key data assets and works closely with procurement and other functions to evaluate future data needs or existing data gaps. Serves as primary contact for future NNI digital strategy regarding data needs and management
Accountable for several aspects of data management including master data management (HCP and patient) and data stewardship, integration of new data sources into NNI systems, business rule management, affiliations, and access management. Also includes metadata management as a key component of data management
Interacts with multiple teams across CI&A, commercial operations, IT (Information Technology), etc. to help manage the data flows between multiple organization units
Tracks commercial use cases across the organization and maps data requirements. Works with IT and other parts of the business to transform data into analytically ready data sets. Serves as an evangelist for appropriate and impactful use of data across NNI. Assess impact of data within the organization and makes appropriate recommendations on usage and procurement
Works with IT to enable access and transformation of data into insights and strategic / tactical recommendations to the business. Includes oversight and strategic direction related to data platforms such as DASH, Apollo, etc. Also collaborates with appropriate teams to onboard data management tools and systems
Acts as primary liaison with other governing organizations within NNI including legal, compliance, privacy, and ethics in determining appropriate and compliant data use. Also chairs the newly formed NNI Data Council across multiple NNI functions
Acts as primary contact with several global organizations related to data governance and management (Global Data Office, Data Management and Analytics, ITC, GBS, etc.)
Leadership and Development:
Champion the Triple Bottom Line in business analytics and internal strategy consulting
Demonstrate creative simple approaches toward solving complex problems
Coach or train junior level staff on analytical approaches, techniques, synthesized storytelling presentation development, business issue identification and methods for addressing, etc.
Pro-actively seek process improvement opportunities by challenging existing processes, proposing solutions, and driving approved implementation plan
Strive to develop and deploy innovative approaches and maintain awareness of 'best practices' across industries by maintaining a current familiarity with analytics and field business assessments
Physical Requirements
0-10% overnight travel required.
Development of People
Ensure that reporting personnel have individual development plans (IDP), with annual goals and measurements that are consistent with the priorities of the business, and that interim reviews are held so that their work is focused on those priorities, and they understand their level of accountability for results and the measurement process. Ensure that the IDP forms include completed learning and aspiration plans and are in place for all reporting personnel to enable the achievement of goals and capability to assume increased levels of responsibility. Manage the application and communication of all Novo Nordisk policies, procedures, and Novo Nordisk Way.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required with at least 11 years of relevant experience; or at least 10 years relevant experience with a Master’s or MBA required. Advanced degree preferred; will consider advanced degree in lieu of some relevant experience to meet minimum qualifications
Relevant experience required should preferably include commercial analysis related fields (Data Management/ Data Governance, Market Research, Marketing/Sales Analytics, Forecasting, etc.)
3+ years’ pharmaceutical experience with direct experience managing medium to large teams, data insights & analytics, and driving engagement with commercial leadership stakeholders is required
Experience with pharmaceutical data, specifically Xponent, Xponent PlanTrak, DDD and LAAD data is required
Experience operating in a fast-paced environment, with a focus on delivering high quality insights & analytics
Effective communication abilities, and ability to create clear and simple presentations in high quality
Strong ability to condense complicated data into a simple message or format
Experience interacting with and influencing senior level leadership within an organization
Experience as a Project Leader responsible for complex project where input and alignment are needed across multiple stakeholders including VP level or above
Deals with concepts and complexity comfortably
Excellent administrative, organizational, project management and analytical skills
Experience managing project budgets and resources
Customer-focused with excellent communication skills and ability to work with all levels within organization
Quantitative analytics skills
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to manage vendors, contracts, and budget activities required
