Our groundbreaking Augmented Molecular Design (AMD) team located in Lake County, IL is looking for a highly motivated and driven cheminformaticist with a solid medicinal chemistry background and established track record of applying computational methods to drive small molecule drug discovery projects forward or a medicinal chemist with a keen interest, knowledge, and track record of applying cheminformatics to drive small molecule drug discovery projects forward.  As a key leader and subject matter expert, you will be expected to apply your knowledge and expertise to enhance our capabilities and efficiencies with particular emphasis on driving and accelerating our drug discovery programs through the establishment of enabling computational applications and methods for cheminformatics- based analyses.  Additionally, you may also be involved in global cross functional initiatives and be expected to apply your state-of-the-art computational know-how to help drive initiatives forward in collaboration with project teams. Candidates should have proven top-tier credentials in cheminformatics and are expected to have a solid understanding of medicinal chemistry. Candidates are also expected to have a significant track record demonstrating an ability to deliver high-impact results and timely solutions within a team-oriented environment. Excellent research skills and experience in developing and leveraging cutting-edge cheminformatics application/tools are a must, as are strong interpersonal skills, an ability to influence multidisciplinary teams, a strong collaborative work ethic, ability to adapt to changing needs, and the capacity to multi-task to meet key goals. Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential to success in this position.

 Key Responsibilities

  • As a senior member of the AMD group, you will be expected to influence and drive the use of state-of-the-art cheminformatics-based methods to significantly augment and improve AbbVie’s drug design paradigm.
  • You will collaborate closely with project teams to pro-actively drive small molecule drug discovery projects forward by applying your significant cheminformatics and medicinal chemistry know-how.
  • You will also be expected to collaborate very closely with discovery scientists to solve problems using cheminformatics-based methods such as: database searching, retrieval, interpretation, and analysis; chemical similarity analysis and clustering; QSAR and related analyses; chemical space mapping; library enumeration and analysis; and developing in-silico MPO methods amongst others.
  • Enhance AbbVie’s current and ever evolving suite of computational tools to further drive competitive advantage in cheminformatics and drug design.
  • Contribute to the design and development of novel methods or tools for analyses and visualization of chemical, chemoproteomic, biological, and structural data.
  • Collaborate closely with discovery colleagues globally to enhance the overall cheminformatics and drug design platform at AbbVie. 
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and present work at scientific conferences aligned with business objectives.

  • Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in Computational Science (cheminformatics or related computational discipline) or a PhD in Synthetic Organic/Medicinal Chemistry and 5-8 years industrial experience.
  • Record of scientific initiative, creativity, and impact in small molecule drug discovery projects.
  • Capable of working independently, interpreting data, and identifying appropriate follow-up strategies.
  • Excellent project management skills. Ability to multitask and work within timelines.
  • Ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively utilizing available information and technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated scientific writing skills and strong verbal communication skills.
  • Global mindset to thrive in a diverse culture and environment.
  •  

    Preferred

  • Experience of using cheminformatics methods to drive small molecule drug discovery projects forward is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Pipeline Pilot and or Knime, as well as Spotfire or other related analytics and visualization platforms is preferred.
  • A considerable knowledge of medicinal chemistry-based design principles in drug discovery.
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art modeling and cheminformatics packages (e.g., RDKit, MOE, Schrodinger, Pipeline Pilot, Knime, Spotfire).
  • ·       Experience with data mining, statistical analysis, machine learning, or artificial intelligence.

    ·       Familiarity with coding (python, SQL) is preferred but not essential.
