Veterinary resources contributes veterinary, animal care, facilities, and other vivarium services to enable Discovery Biology research. Animal Care operates under the direction of Veterinary Resources management to ensure a quality, compliant animal care program. Veterinary Resources is part of the larger ADME, Toxicology, Pathology, Lab Experimental Medicine, Veterinary Resources (ATPLV) division of Lilly Research Laboratories. We enable key capabilities to our research organization. We provide cage wash services, husbandry, clinical care, and technical support for laboratory animals. Other responsibilities include daily cleaning and sanitation of animal room and vivarium support space. A variety of technical projects and project management opportunities supporting the ATPLV organization may also be required within this role.

Objectives
  • Provide animal husbandry support including daily health observations, feed and water observations, preparing cages for change out, changing cages on a scheduled basis.
  • Provide sanitation services associated with animal rooms, procedure laboratories, necropsy rooms, surgery suites, and other support facilities.
  • Provide general housekeeping services for corridors and support areas (feed rooms, procedure rooms, surgery rooms, necropsy rooms, rest rooms, cage wash, etc.).
  • Provide support including, but not limited to, performing limited prophylactic or therapeutic measures on animals, performing various methods of animal identification, maintaining records (census, room log, etc.) daily. Observe laboratory animals for variations in the dietary habits, feces and urine character, health status, unusual behavior and death.
  • Report distress or signs of disease to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform animal receipt, animal census, technical support, project support, and administrative support.
  • Support Discovery, Veterinary Resources, and divisional needs through committee and project involvement and project management.
  • Perform other services as assigned by Management in compliance with the needs of Veterinary Resources.
Minimum Requirements
  • HS education required.
  • One year experience working directly with animals.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.
Additional Preferences
  • Transferrable skills and ability to learn new tasks.
  • Verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences field or Registered Veterinary Technician.
  • Awareness and general understanding of established and proposed federal, state and local regulations, guidelines and policies relating to laboratory animal science
  • Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). Certification by (AALAS) at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level or higher is encouraged to be attained within the first year of employment in order to be considered successful in this position.
  • Awareness and general understanding of provisions set forth in the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals".
  • General knowledge of machinery is helpful.
Other Information
  • This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed duration of 2 years with potential to extend annually for up to 4 years.
  • Requires working with animals. Individuals with known allergies to animals, formalin, corn products, or wood products should not apply. Requires the use of personal protective equipment. Must be able to push, pull, and/or lift 50 pounds. Also requires long periods of walking, standing, and performing highly repetitive tasks with arms and hands.
  • Work hours: 6:00AM - 3:00PM. Flexibility required for potential changes in work shift hours. Weekend, holiday, and after-hours overtime is expected.
