The Role

As part of our vision, Moderna is committed to invest in R&D to further expand our impact on patients. We are building an independent research and business unit for genomic medicines, called Moderna Genomics (mGx) based in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA. mGx will be an innovation engine for the company focused on discovering and delivering the next generation of in vivo gene editing and nonviral gene therapies. It is our intention to be an industry leader in genomic medicines.

Within mGx, the Gene Editing Innovation (GEI) team seeks a skilled, experienced, and highly motivated Principal Research Associate to join our Gene Editing Innovation group. The successful candidate will contribute to discovery research by applying his/her/their expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, and mammalian cell culture to characterize the activity of novel gene editing systems in cell lines of interest. You will contribute to our initiatives to deliver the best-in-class gene-editing systems for precision therapeutics, leveraging our proven mRNA and delivery platforms.

This role will have the unique opportunity to be an early member of the GEI team, making an impact by helping discover and enable key mGx gene editing efforts and contributing to building the team and culture for this exciting initiative.

Heres What Youll Do

  • Apply experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, mammalian cell culture, and high-throughput assays to plan and carry out experiments characterizing mRNA-encoded gene editors

  • Perform assays spanning a range of molecular and cellular biological techniques, including gel electrophoresis, PCR, and qPCR

  • Perform cell culture, including maintenance and manipulation of cell lines

  • Maintain clear and detailed electronic notebook

  • Work well as part of a team

  • Present findings to larger team and key stakeholders

  • Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time

Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • A bachelors degree in Cell or Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biological Engineering, or related disciplines

  • 3+ years of experience in wet-lab biotechnology

  • Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Ability to learn quickly and carry out controlled experiments

  • Hands-on experience with gene-editing technology is highly desired

  • Hands-on experience with molecular biology and nucleic acid characterization techniques including gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis, and qPCR is highly desired

  • Experience with NGS and genomics is a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
