Observational research (OR) is an increasingly important component in drug development and commercialization because, in the current environment, there is increased demand for information from OR studies for regulatory and reimbursement authorities. The Center for Observational Research (CfOR) at Amgen partners with teams to generate real-world evidence for multiple collaborators across the product lifecycle. CfOR provides evidence regarding the frequency and distribution of disease or the clinical burden of disease, the natural history or clinical course of the disease, the design of clinical trials, cost and utilization patterns, and the safety and efficiency of interventions.
Amgen is searching for an Observational Research Director (Epidemiology). The director will have responsibilities for research activities in CfORs Data and Analytics Center (DAC) leading the Forecasting Functional Group. The Forecasting director is recognized as a strong scientific contributor with excellent communication and negotiating skills, will lead a small team of PhD-trained scientists, and will manage relationships with individuals on both the R&D and Commercial sides of the business. This role will primarily be located on the Amgen corporate campus in Thousand Oaks, CA, but remote opportunities may also be available.
Key Activities include:Direct a team passionate about designing and implementing studies to generate addressable patient population sizing estimates at a global level
Interface, negotiate, and communicate effectively with cross-functional colleagues from both R&D and Commercial
Influence cross-functional stakeholders as to the appropriate use and timing of non-interventional research to answer high-priority strategic business questions
Leverage real-world data and CfOR analytic approaches to advise high-value business decisions for multiple stakeholders
Track business and functional priorities and align resources against those priorities
Contribute to the mission of CfOR, including progressing innovative epidemiological methods and analytical capabilities to support CfORs leadership role within Amgen and the industry
Optimally lead, develop, and mentor staff
Participate in initiatives to improve capabilities within CfOR and provide input into CfOR meetings
Contribute to the development of product and CfOR strategy
Develop and maintain relationships with key leaders in observational research
What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:Doctorate degree and 4 years of scientific experience
Masters degree and 8 years of scientific experience
Bachelors degree and 10 years of scientific experience; AND
4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation of resources
Doctorate in Epidemiology or other subject with high observational research content
Experience in the design, implementation, and analysis of observation research studies within a Pharmaceutical or Public Health setting
Experience in research to support drug development
Experience in observational research project planning and management
Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal abilities
Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams

The annual base salary range for this opportunity in the U.S. is $195,403 - $227,597.
