The Role:
Moderna is seeking a Senior Engineer I for a position in the Automation Engineering (AE) team, at the Moderna manufacturing site in Norwood, MA to drive the advancement of our next generation of automated laboratory systems, processes, and equipment. Reporting to the Head of Applied Technologies, the individual in this role will focus on the development of novel microfluidic, multifluidic, and system fluidics solutions for custom/proprietary and traditional biomanufacturing methods for use in the production of messenger RNA based vaccines and therapeutics at Moderna. This role will have an impact across our organization by driving cross functional collaboration between technical teams supporting our Research, Development, High-Throughput, Pre-Clinical, and GMP laboratories. He/she will play a key role during the design, build, test, deploy, and continuous improvement lifecycles of key laboratory systems deployed at Moderna.
Here's What Youll Do:
Design, develop and characterize microfluidic based devices for biomanufacturing and analytical applications.
Design and execute experiments to assess the technical feasibility, and performance of assays, fluidics, microfluidics, sensors, and systems.
Actively work and optimize sensor integration and assembly with consumables.
Evaluate different materials and processes for large scale production for consumables including sensor and cartridge.
Lead sensors manufacturing processes for lab-scale and high-volume production.
Evaluate and lead vendor communication for various sensor development paths.
Effectively work within multidisciplinary teams of assay developers, system engineers, and microfluidic engineers to brainstorm new concepts
Develop specialized Biomanufacturing equipment to enable key scientific processes for Modernas mRNA portfolio, spanning the areas of R&D, Drug Substance, Drug Product, Fill-Finish, QC Release, and other related laboratory processes.
Work cross-functionally alongside colleagues in Process Development, Manufacturing, Facilities and Engineering, MS&T, Quality, IT, Operations, and related teams as required to determine business requirements and deliver novel solutions.
Mechanical and Electrical Computer Aided Design (CAD), system prototyping, conceptual refinement, and final delivery
Develop novel or improve existing PLC/HMI software for novel automated laboratory equipment
Lead efforts to successfully deploy custom designed biomanufacturing equipment for use at Moderna in a pre-clinical, GLP, and GMP environments
Assist with management and analysis of complex data
Provide scientific and technical support for multidisciplinary project teams
Preparation of training documents and technical design review presentations for the end users
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
Minimum Qualifications
B.S. in STEM, Biomedical, Biophysics, Biopharma Engineering or a related field with no less than 8 years of experience in an industry setting.
Prior success in developing automated equipment for biopharmaceutical and life sciences teams
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic environment

A limitless curiosity enabling quick mastery of new techniques and concepts
Ability to multi-task to meet timelines and relentless in pursuing successful outcomes
Experience with 3D modeling and simulation CAD packages such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, COMSOL, or equivalent
Experience with plastic manufacturing (e.g. injection molding, hot embossing, plastic bonding, 3D printing, etc)
Experience with microscopy and optical inspection instrumentation
Experience in engineering particle manipulation methods (e.g. Hydrodynamic, dielectrophoretic, acoustophoretic, optical, etc)
Exceptional written and oral communication
Preferred Qualifications
M.S. in STEM or a related field with no less than 5 years experience in a relevant industry or Phd with academic experience in a related field
Direct experience with Nucleic-Acid based biological laboratory methods
Fundamental understanding of a variety of bio-separations and detection methods
Experience with industrial automation programming (PLC/SCADA/DCS, etc.)
Experience programming industrial / collaborative robot arms or other robotic systems
Experience identifying external key partners and collaborators for the design of custom manufactured equipment and prototypes
