Scientist, Protein Engineering

Sutro is seeking a talented Scientist to join our exciting, fast-paced working environment. This role encompasses designing, directing, and troubleshooting biologic discovery workstreams. As a key contributor in the Discovery team, a successful candidate will help set project direction, mentor team members, and execute at the bench to help develop novel biologics that impact patient outcomes.

Responsibilities:

• Discover new biologics by designing screening assays for program targets and executing high-throughput screening assays for lead selection
• Employ a range of biochemical and biophysical assays to help identify lead molecules, including: ELISA, facs, SPR/BLI, DSF, DLS
• Execute high-throughput protein expression and purification campaigns to support lead molecule screening and recommend process improvements
• Support assay automation, laboratory robotics platforms, and high-throughput data analysis
• Engage cross-functionally with project teams to ensure progress of biologics discovery and engineering campaigns and with Protein Biochemistry and Analytical teams to support developability assays
• Establish new technologies and methods that build on our capabilities to target challenging tumor antigens, engineer new biologic formats, and maximize the potential of our CellFree platform
• Communicate key findings at project team meetings and propose paths to effectively design and interrogate drug molecules

Qualifications:

• PhD with 3 years of experience in Biologics Discovery/Screening, Protein Engineering, or a related field, with demonstrated expertise in antibody discovery and screening and/or protein engineering
• Understanding of protein biochemistry, protein purification, and biophysical characterization methods
• Experience with ELISA and facs assay development and execution
• Hands-on knowledge of Biacore and/or Carterra is desirable
• Capability to analyze high-throughput datasets and sequencing data
• Previous experience with laboratory automation is desirable, but not required
• Demonstrated ability to multi-task and think critically
• Highly self-motivated and capable of working successfully within a team environment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

The anticipated salary range for fully qualified candidates applying for this role at Sutro Biopharma’s California based locations will be [$120,000 - $135,000] (not including bonus, equity, and benefits). The final salary offered will be dependent on several factors that include and are not limited to relevant previous experience, job responsibilities and duration of experience, the type and length of experience within the industry and education.
