Sr. Director, R&D Strategy

The Role

Moderna continues to leverage its novel mRNA platform to expand the R&D portfolio and open new therapeutic applications for mRNA across diseases and therapeutic areas. R&D Strategy plays a crucial role for Moderna to achieve its mission to deliver the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines by supporting critical research and development decisions.

The R&D Strategy team operates across research and development to provide analysis and guidance from discovery through development, including:

• Research strategy to provide a scientific and business assessment of discovery concepts and novel applications of mRNA

• Program-level strategy to drive research, preclinical and clinical development choices

• Therapeutic area strategy to assess acceleration and expansion opportunities and set prioritization and sequencing

• Portfolio strategy to drive R&D priorities and objectives

• Special strategic topics to provide guidance on the most complex R&D questions

The Senior Director, R&D Strategy will be responsible for a portfolio of special strategy projects focused around one or more key pillars of R&D and enterprise strategy (e.g., respiratory vaccines, cancer vaccines, rare metabolic therapies, next generation pipeline and platform). The Senior Director will direct a team to execute on the agenda of strategy projects and act as an advisor for senior program and R&D leadership. This person will act as a critical integrator across the R&D portfolio to identify and drive towards R&D value catalysts through prioritization and sequencing of programs and resources.

Heres What Youll Do

• Generate and prioritize a portfolio of strategy projects to answer critical program or portfolio questions or identify new pools of value to tap with mRNA

• Lead execution of the agenda of strategy projects, mentoring and guiding a team to frame, deliver and action the most complex and cross-functional R&D questions

• Integrate portfolio and program perspectives into enterprise strategy, contributing to long-range planning, objective setting, and portfolio prioritization

• Be a trusted advisor and thought partner for Program Leadership and the R&D Leadership Team

• Influence program and therapeutic areas strategy to align with the integrated R&D Strategy; identify and advance portfolio value catalysts

• Integrate and execute on learnings uncovered throughout the portfolio to pivot and advance therapeutic area, portfolio, and R&D strategy objectives

• Maintain an enterprise view across research, development, manufacturing and commercial

• Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time

Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

• 12+ years of experience working for a clinical- or commercial-stage pharmaceutical/biotech company in strategy or corporate development, or similar experience in a professional services or investment capacity (e.g., management or strategy consulting, investment banking, or venture capital)

• PhD, MD, or PharmD preferred, with an understanding of drug development and value creation in the biopharmaceutical industry, and commitment to learn about the science behind our platform technology
