Senior Scientist, Computational Biology – Tumor Immune Microenvironment Research

Introduction:

The Genomic Research Center, Computational Oncology, Research and Early Development group (GRC-CORED) at AbbVie is seeking a highly motivated computational biologist to play an integral role in a multi-disciplinary team focused on developing new therapies and approaches for cancer treatment. AbbVie’s GRC is a center of excellence for bioinformatics, functional genomics, human genetics, and pharmacogenomics. The GRC works across all R&D including discovery and clinical development, and multiple areas such as process sciences, global epidemiology, search and evaluation, and corporate strategy.

Role Overview:

This is an exceptional opportunity within a cross-functional group at AbbVie. The position is focused on discovering basic biology to advance AbbVie Immuno-Oncology pipeline but also involves supporting existing AbbVie programs. With a goal to better understand anti-tumor immune responses against cancer, this role aims to facilitate drug discovery. You will be engaged in characterizing immune microenvironments of solid tumors utilizing various genomics platforms from internal and external sources. These platforms and tools include, but not limited to, spatial/single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics and as well as cutting-edge analysis algorithms. The expertise you bring in and develop here, will have the opportunity to influence drug discovery in a data-driven manner and to ultimately make an impact on patients’ lives. While contributing to AbbVie pipeline, you will have multiple opportunities to publish and disseminate some of the learnings. This role will be located at AbbVie’s new campus at the heart of South San Francisco, CA with access to State-of the-Art scientific capabilities and a great Work/Life balance.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and execute computational strategy leveraging internal and external bulk, single-cell and spatial datasets to advance AbbVie’s target identification evaluation and validation (TIEV) initiative.

Apply machine learning and deep learning approaches to link high-dimensional genomics features to oncogenic and immunosuppressive cellular programs/states.

Lead computational oncology efforts to enable critical data input to advance existing AbbVie assets in the early development and in clinical trial phases.

Lead (or contribute to) the manuscript preparation to disseminate some of the findings as high-impact scientific publications.

Impact decision-making by communicating research findings to a broad scientific audience, including computational biologists, non-computational scientists, and senior leadership.

Provide expertise and technical consultation for external collaborations / partnerships in academia and industry

PhD in computational biology, genomics, molecular/cancer biology (with computational focus), or a related field with typically 2+ (PhD), 5+ (MS) years of relevant experience

Strong communication skills to foster collaboration in cross-functional teams.

Strong understanding of the hallmarks of oncogenesis.

An incessant curiosity to learn and develop as a scientist and apply the learnings to help patients.

Proficient in at least one general purpose programming/data science languages including but not limited to R, Python.

Experience with common NGS data processing tools, statistical analysis, and machine learning.

Preferred:

Creates a learning environment, open to suggestions and experimentation for improvement.

Experience with multiple integrative spatial and single-cell analysis algorithms/methods.

Experience in analyzing proteomics and/or functional genomics screening data.

Good understanding of biology of cellular signaling, metabolism and/or tumor immunogenicity.

Good understanding of tumor-intrinsic and/or T-cell biology (i.e. metabolic, mitogenic, fibrotic and innate immune pathways and/or T cell exhaustion).  

Understand how to use and leverage containers for deploying standard pipelines (Docker, AWS Container, etc.)

Familiarity with assay technologies and algorithm principles related to bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq, spatial transcriptomics, WES/WGS, Mass-spec proteomics, ATAC-seq, etc.

The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
