Associate Scientist - Downstream Process Development

Gilead has an opportunity for an experienced candidate in our downstream process development group at our Oceanside facility in Southern California. We are seeking a highly motivated, team-oriented individual to support downstream process development for our rapidly growing biologics pipeline.

Key Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates hands-on experience in all aspects of downstream process development including depth filtration, chromatography, and tangential flow filtration (TFF).
• Plans and executes assigned experiments, with increasing independence, that support process development activities and project goals.
• Serves as process development representative during purification operations, provides technical troubleshooting and identifies opportunities for future process and equipment improvements.
• Participate in technology transfer from process development to clinical GMP manufacturing (internal or external CDMO partner).
• Makes decisions affecting direction of project and for ensuring project timelines are met.

• Writes technical reports. Presents results of work, interprets data, and draws conclusions regarding presented material and nature of work.
• Mentor, motivate, and develop more junior people in the group.

Basic Qualifications/Skills/Experience:

• BS with 5+ or MS with 3+ years of biopharma industrial experience in a relevant scientific discipline (biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemistry, bioengineering, etc)

Preferred Skills:

• Broad understanding of downstream process development including centrifugation, normal flow filtration, chromatography operations, tangential flow filtration, and virus inactivation/removal
• Extensive experience with ÄKTA and UNICORN™ Software is preferred
• Candidates should be self-motivated and organized, familiar with the relevant literature, and enjoy scientific investigation and thinking.
• Experience in statistics and data analysis (e.g. JMP, Spotfire) is a plus
• Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are desirable
• Experience in tech transfer and familiarization of pilot plant and GMP manufacturing is a plus

The salary range for this position is: $109,480.00 - $141,680.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
