The Role:

Moderna is seeking a talented, experienced, and motivated Scientist to join the Clinical Flow Cytometry group to serve as a scientific and technical expert for flow cytometry assay validation, and clinical testing to support clinical programs across multiple therapeutic areas. The Scientist will work with a team to develop cell-based flow cytometry assays, perform fit-for-purpose validations, and assay clinical samples to return high quality data for clinical trials conducted by Moderna. You will be an integral part in applying high parameter flow and complex assays to generate key clinical data to drive clinical trial decisions.

The candidate will have broad knowledge of best practices in clinical flow cytometry with proven experience. The Scientist will effectively communicate across multi-disciplinary teams to contextualize program needs and effectively plan studies to meet data rigor expectations and deliver data within required timelines. In addition, the candidate will be involved in the training of junior team members when and where needed to perform analytical work and maintain clinical testing continuity.

Here's What Youll Do:

  • Work with a team of scientists to perform high parameter spectral flow cytometry assays on clinical trial samples to generate key data for clinical decision making in adherence to GCLP guidelines

  • Plan, organize, and execute assay qualification and fit-for-purpose validation studies as directed by the supervisor/study Lead

  • Run experiments independently and accurately analyze and present data

  • Conduct ex vivo experimental work for functional profiling of immune responses

  • Coordinate within the team and across the teams in the organization to execute clinical sample testing under GCLP guidelines

  • Work with the team to refine documentation procedures and workflows aligned to clinical cytometry industry expectations and regulations

  • Identify and resolve issues in flow assays, employ mitigation strategies, and escalate issues

  • Identify and work to alleviate bottlenecks in current workflows to increase efficiency

  • Educate and train junior staff in flow cytometry, technical detailed execution of assays, and documentation requirements and workflows where appropriate.

  • Research scientific and technical literature to propose, test, and implement innovative solutions that may be applicable to the laboratory

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Ph.D. with >2 years of high parameter flow cytometry experience, or MS with >5 years of high parameter flow cytometry experience

  • Strong level of understanding and expertise in designing and executing immune-related studies and assays

  • In depth experience in performing complex multiparameter flow cytometry assays including immunophenotyping and ex vivo cell-based assays for functional profiling such as intracellular cytokine staining, cell activation and proliferation, etc.

  • Experience with flow cytometry assay fit-for-purpose validation applicable for intended use of data is a plus.

  • Experience in clinical lab setting is highly desired

  • The ability to work in a cross-functional work environment with effective communication skills to contextualize program needs and effectively plan studies to meet data rigor expectations and deliver data within required timelines

  • Excellent organizational and planning (project management) skills

  • Flexibility with changing priorities and urgent project requests

  • Experience in high parameter data analysis using software such as FCS Express, OMIQ, Flowjo

  • Excellent documentation practices

  • Understanding and experience in Spectral flow cytometry is preferred

  • Experience in a bio-pharmaceutical or related industrial experience is desired

  • Experience with LIMS and electronic notebook (ELN) is desired

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
