Job Details

The Role:

Reporting to the VP of Immunology Research at Moderna, the Senior Director (SD) of Immune Correlates is responsible for leading innovation in vaccine and therapeutic design and delivery. The SD will work in a highly translational framework aimed at deeply dissecting the mechanism of action of mRNA therapeutics. The SD will be specifically tasked with the translation of immunological signatures of protective immunity from natural infection to preclinical models to vaccine design. The SD will lead a team aimed at developing high-dimensional immunological tools, driving automation, inspiring machine learning, and developing new workstreams to fully define the impact of mRNA in shaping protective immune responses. The SD will work across the organization, aimed at building knowledge to inform early vaccine design, endpoint assays, regulatory needs, and product life-cycle management. The SD will work closely with vaccine programmatic teams to develop animal modeling strategies to validate and confirm correlates of immunity, and gain tissue-specific mechanistic insights on the key players and functions that shape pathogen control and clearance. The SD will furthermore partner to develop statistical frameworks to validate immunologic signatures across orthogonal vaccine datasets. The SD will also work to develop a deeper understanding of immunogenicity and protective gaps in immune compromised or vulnerable populations to shape next generation therapeutic design. Linked to machine learning, the SD and their team will build an unparalleled knowledge base that can ultimately inform all areas of the organization on the immunological mechanisms harnessed by Modernas mRNA therapeutics. The SD will drive a large portfolio of studies and develop multi-functional collaborations focused on challenging our understanding on mRNA and to shape the future of mRNA therapeutics.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Develop and apply a multi-omic analytical strategy to dissect and define immunological correlates of immunity against target pathogens or disease

  • Develop a cross-species translational workflow to use correlates to guide vaccine design and development

  • Develop human and animal model validation models to conclusively define mechanisms of immunity

  • Leverage internal and external collaborative opportunities to fully explore the mechanism(s) by which mRNA therapeutics drive pathogen control and clearance

  • Drive innovative adaptive immune mechanistic dissection

  • Develop cross-specific predictive modeling

  • Develop a disease specific immune atlas for target infections to help shape our understanding of protective mechanisms and how they may vary across populations

  • Lead efforts to drive enhanced immunity in vulnerable populations

  • Develop machine learning and automation to accelerate immune profiling efforts

  • Integrate NextGen vaccine design across Infectious Disease and beyond to maximize potential impact across programs.

  • Act as a leader in the Immunology and Infectious Disease Leadership Team, contributing to the development of novel therapeutics, but also informing clinical translation.

  • Collaborate and work closely with Clinical and Regulatory to strategically build a pipeline of data required to accelerate product development.

  • Interact closely with other therapeutic areas to maximize learnings and drive innovation.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. plus 14 years experience in immunology, microbiology, virology, or related field.

  • Extensive experience in immune profiling in animal models and/or humans

  • Clear leadership experience

  • Experience in multi-OMIC analysis

  • Experience in evaluating vaccine profiles

  • Extensive experience in translational immunology

  • Strong written and oral communication skills scaling through all levels of the organization, including senior management

  • Strong leadership skills and an ability to collaborate productively across multiple cross-functional project teams are paramount.

  • Acts with urgency with the understanding that actions today compounds lives saved tomorrow

  • Obsesses over learning, questions convention and strives to push past possible Scientific rigor & commitment to excellence and innovation.

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
