The Virology group of Infectious Disease Research in Moderna is seeking a talented, experienced and motivated Principal Scientist with experience in virology, molecular biology, infection quantification assays, and in vitro and in vivo study design and execution. The Principal Scientist will be part of teams responsible for advancing therapeutic and vaccine candidates from discovery through IND-enabling studies and clinical trials. He/She will design, execute and interpret experiments to evaluate novel vaccines for viral diseases and take the lead role on driving the project, program or building new capabilities. This work will include identifying vaccine targets, development and execution of studies and readouts to evaluate vaccine candidates. In addition, the Principal Scientist will help to identify, develop, and use novel screens to identify vaccine approaches that work best for targets of interest. The candidate will interface with collaborators and present results both internally and externally. The ability to effectively communicate across internal multi-disciplinary teams and with external partners is required. Applicants should be outstanding scientists, collaborative team members, excellent communicators, and excited to work with cutting edge mRNA technology in the advancement of vaccines against viral pathogens.
Here's What Youll Do:
Assist in the identification of new targets for vaccine intervention and/or identification of novel approaches that utilize the mRNA platform in the development of new or better vaccines.
Design, optimize, implement and conduct assays and experimental approaches to determine antiviral activity in vitro and/or in vivo elicited by various vaccine candidates.
Review literature for relevant approaches and for new technology with application to infectious disease research
Design and execute experiments to characterize antigens encoded by mRNA vaccine candidates.
Develop relations with pre-clinical and clinical collaborators both internally and externally, and review pre-clinical results in partnership with other ID team members.
Manage multiple experiments, projects and interactions with supporting functions simultaneously.
Present experimental results at group meetings, project meetings, and department meetings
Collaborate across ID function and cross-platform
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
Exceptional PhD in Virology, Microbiology or related discipline, with expertise in infectious diseases and molecular biology required. Knowledge of coronaviruses & immunology would be a plus.
7+ years of postdoctoral or independent research experience; vaccine development would be a plus.
Experience in virology in vitro assays such as viral culture, neutralization and quantification assays. Automation experience is a plus.
High level of experience working with external academic collaborators, vaccine research units, or CROs
Demonstrated ability to design and execute new experimental approaches.
Contributions to high impact publications/presentations in the field of virology, vaccinology or infectious diseases.
The ability to work in a cross-functional work environment is critical; strong leadership skills and independence skills are expected.
Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills; ability to influence and collaborate in a team environment.
Candidate will be curious in exploring new path for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
