The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION     

The Occupational Health Services (OHS) program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick provides comprehensive professional occupational health nursing care to employees working in general offices, industrial shops, experimental research laboratories, and animal care environments. Work is performed within the clinic providing occupational, urgent, and emergency post exposure to biological, chemical, radiation exposures. 

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assesses the health status of employees by conducting interviews, occupational health histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests
  • Counsels and advises employees on health matters, files worker compensation claims for job related injuries, and prepares and maintains employee medical and health status records
  • Rotates on call with the clinical staff and responds to emergencies
  • Renders first aid and post exposure care for biological emergencies per written medical protocols
  • Independently interprets data to determine needs and plans appropriate therapeutic measures
  • Engages in primary healthcare decision-making in collaboration with physicians and other members of the occupational health team
  • Provides clear communication to the nursing team; provides concise documentation in reports and clearly explains care/discharge plans
  • Follows up as directed
  • Edits or composes documents and standard operating procedures
  • Provides rotating on call 24/7 for occupational care post exposure

**Part time 20 hours/week**

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Must possess a degree/diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant
  • Possession of a MS degree from an accredited college or university (according to CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  •  Must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States
  • Must have appropriate certification issued by the appropriate certifying body the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Must be Maryland State Board eligible. Eligibility includes documentation of a pending Maryland license
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Medical Director and various levels of medical staff
  • Ability to assess acute and non-acute medical problems
  • Ability to develop patient rapport and provide emotional support in helping patients cope with stress associated with illnesses
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:  

  • Experience in standard and investigational therapy in a research setting
  • Professional mastery of clinical nursing knowledge including patient assessment, medical care and pharmacology

JOB HAZARDS

  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
  • This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance
