About This Role

The Staff Physicist, Beam Systems performs as the lead engineer for microwave linear accelerator system design, operation, troubleshooting, analysis and improvements for a state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine, supporting sustaining engineering of installed product and leading R&D engineering and development in support of the product road map.

The future incumbent will provide intellectual leadership in pursuit of system performance issues and improvements, including analyzing, presenting, advising, mentoring and guiding the organization to identify and prioritize opportunities to provide for better machine performance and improved customer experience.


 What You Will Be Doing

  • Providing leadership in microwave linear accelerator system design, operation, troubleshooting, analysis and design improvements.
  • Assessing system level performance, identifying beneficial new technologies and principles, and informing product roadmap design evolution.
  • Evaluating system diagnostics to uncover trends and develop predictive models in support of reliability improvements.
  • Participating in cross-functional collaboration to improve customer experience by identifying and implementing improvements in process and product.
  • Proposing and reviewing improvements to beam system specifications, and beam system verification and validation testing.
  • Reviewing and testing system safety interlock functionality in support of risk analysis.
  • Mentoring and advising cross-functional stakeholders in accelerator physics and system performance.
  • Working with outside vendors in support of performance and reliability improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel within a high-energy, focused team environment, to maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward, and to make work fun and interesting.
  • Other duties as required.

Where You Will Do This Job  

  • Hybrid - This position will allow the successful candidate to work on a Hybrid work location schedule. They must be based in the greater SF Bay Area and must be able to commute into the RefleXion office in Hayward 1-4 days a week, depending on the role.

What We Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics or in a related Engineering discipline with coursework in accelerator physics and at least 15 years of direct experience with accelerator systems
  • Master's degree in Physics or in a related Engineering discipline with at least 10 years of direct experience with accelerator systems
  • Ph.D in Physics or in a related Engineering discipline with at least 5 years of experience in accelerator systems
  • 5+ years of direct, hands-on experience in linear accelerator or high-power microwave tube technology including several of: design, manufacture, assembly, test, troubleshooting installation, commissioning, operations, service
  • Subject matter expert in accelerator systems, instruments and methods, with experience in radiotherapy systems a plus
  • Demonstrated experience in meeting requirements of a Quality Management System
  • Experience in process development and documentation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint required; experience with Smartsheet a plus
  • Technical expert in accelerator physics and systems
  • Must be able to lift at least 10 lbs safely 
  • Incumbent must be comfortable and able to work  in a variety of laboratory and product development environments including working with High Voltage, Microwave Labs, Magnetic Field, X-Ray, SF6
  • Occasional travel required

The pay range for this role is $120,000-$220,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor. The total compensation package for this position may also include bonus, stock, benefits and/or other applicable variable compensation.
