The Senior Director, Digital and Social Media Communications serves as the editor-in-chief of the company’s global corporate social media channels and website (BioMarin.com). The position is responsible for content strategy, providing editorial counsel and oversight, as well as for the management of BioMarin’s corporate digital platforms.

This individual will architect the company’s digital storytelling strategy, using a combination of written, visual and video content to convey BioMarin’s messages across channels. Strong storytelling experience and the ability to create thoughtful and engaging content (video, graphics, copy) for online channels that centers around scientifically driven and patient-focused drug development is required. This person will be responsible for developing a strategic vision for an integrated digital presence and deploying new and existing digital communication technologies as a key component of the company’s overall interaction with key stakeholders. 

This results-oriented, seasoned individual will be part of the Corporate Communications team, combining creativity with analytical thinking and helping the team scale amid a period of rapid growth for the company.

The Senior Director will partner closely with the Digital Marketing team to advance the company’s integrated digital and social media presence. This individual will also lead the digital component of major programs and storytelling that help build and enhance BioMarin’s reputation at the national and global levels.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of compelling short-form and long-form content that enhances our corporate reputation and advances the company’s business needs
  • Oversee the development and execution of integrated digital/social media strategies that advance BioMarin’s business objectives and further promote and protect our brand
  • Provide editorial oversight and direction for all BioMarin’s owned digital channels, including BioMarin.com and BioMarin’s corporate social media channels.
  • Management of editorial calendars, content assignments, video production, copy editing, approval and clearance, and feedback
  • Maintain editorial standards and guidelines for corporate external digital communications
  • Work closely with agency PR partners to ensure activities (unbranded and branded) adhere to regulatory and legal guidelines, are in line with product communication strategy, are completed on-time and within budget
  • Provide and develop engaging, relevant and timely ideas for editorial content in partnership with Commercial, Worldwide R&D and Corporate Communications team collages to elevate and enhance BioMarin’s corporate reputation
  • Produce ongoing communications analytics reports to update the organization on relevant happenings and inform communications strategy
  • Proactively assess and adopt emergent communications technologies, integrating into digital strategy to enable BioMarin to be communications pioneers in the biotech space
  • Monitor BioMarin’s owned channels and the earned media space for brand opportunities and threats
  • Manage BioMarin’s Digital Crisis Communications Portal, ensuring that content and key information is up-to-date and that key BioMarin leadership are trained to use the Portal when issues and crises arise

 

Requirements

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 15 years of related experience in journalism, communications, public relations, biology or related field
  • Communications experience in the biopharma industry at a publicly traded company
  • Experience providing editorial direction for a global, dynamic organization; capacity to prioritize editorial resources and coordinate schedules, budgets and staffing
  • Working knowledge of FDA and EMA regulations as applied to the communication of investigational and marketed drugs and a good understanding of public policy challenges currently affecting the healthcare industry
  • Knowledge of and experience with multiple online channels (web, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, mobile devices), with a track record of growing and engaging online audiences
  • Ability to use qualitative and quantitative data and insights to create or adjust forward-looking communications strategies
  • Experience working with interactive marketing agencies and advertising agencies, with a knowledge of AP style and principles of writing for the Web/rich media
  • Basic experience in digital media monitoring software (e.g., Brandwatch, Sprinklr, Meltwater)
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and cross-functionally
  • High level of professionalism and confidence to work effectively with and influence employees at all levels of the organization, including senior leaders, functional managers and research scientists
