The Bioproduct Research and Development (BRD) organization at Lilly’s Technology Center in Indianapolis develops medicines that address significant unmet needs by leveraging innovative scientific capabilities. We collaborate with colleagues across Lilly, including scientists in Synthetic Molecule Design and Development (SMDD), Discovery, ADME, Toxicology, PK/PD, Clinical development, Manufacturing, and more. We are looking for a motivated scientist with deep expertise in mass spectrometry for biomolecules to join our Structural Characterization Team. The successful candidate will develop and apply cutting-edge mass spectrometry techniques to enable innovations in process and product development and analytical control strategy for diverse classes of biotherapeutics including complex yet promising new therapeutic modalities such as gene therapies, fusion proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides, and protein-drug conjugates.


Responsibilities

  • Apply proteomics techniques to gain insights on structure-function relationships of new therapeutic modalities to inform product improvement and innovative analytical control strategy solutions.

  • Apply proteomics techniques to study the cellular mechanisms of cell culture process to inform process development to improve product productivity and quality.

  • Develop innovative LC-MS methods to characterize structure and impurities of complex new therapeutic modalities such as gene therapies, fusion proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides, and protein-drug conjugates. 

  • Partner closely with colleagues across Lilly, including the Structural Characterization Team, other groups in BRD, Medicines Innovation Hub, ADME/Toxicology/PKPD, Clinical, and Manufacturing.

  • Innovate to improve core technologies and build next-generation mass spectrometry capabilities.

  • Actively engage with the broader scientific community by reading scientific and trade literature, attending/presenting at meetings and conferences, and authoring original research publications. Identify, champion, and deliver opportunities to create value from the external environment.


Basic Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or related field

  • Experience in proteomics and/or characterization of biomolecules using mass spectrometry.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Track record of publications of proteomics and/or characterization of biomolecules using mass spectrometry.

  • Thorough understanding of established and emerging mass spectrometry techniques and methodology for proteomics and characterization of complex biomolecules.

  • Extensive hands-on experience with nano-LC and advanced mass spectrometry instruments.

  • Experience with characterization of proteins, synthetic peptides, oligonucleotides, RNA or DNA.

  • Experience with developing chromatographic separation methods for analysis of complex biomolecule samples.

  • Computer programming skill.

  • Ability to carry out research programs independently and to collaborate effectively with others in a multifunctional team environment.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

  • Travel: Less than 10%
