The Role

As part of our vision, Moderna is committed to invest in R&D to further expand our impact on patients. We are building an independent research and business unit for genomic medicines, called Moderna Genomics (mGx) based in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA. mGx, striving to be an industry leader in genomic medicines, will be an innovation engine for the company focused on discovering and delivering the next generation of in vivo gene editing and nonviral gene therapies.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated cell biologist for a position at Moderna Genomics in Cambridge, MA. The individual will be responsible for the development and execution of lentivirus-based high-throughput pooled assays in support of Moderna Genomics discovery programs. The ideal candidate will play an integral role in advancing our gene editing platform utilizing a wide range of molecular and cellular biology techniques. Extensive experience in lentivirus transduction, mammalian cell culture, transfection, flow cytometry and cell-based assays such as Western blot/JESS, ELISA, and Luminex is required.

Applicants should be team players, able to thrive in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Heres What Youll Do

  • Generate stable cell lines through transduction of lentiviral vectors, antibiotic selection, and flow cytometry. Establish and maintain Cell Bank to support Moderna Genomics programs.

  • Engineer mammalian cells by introducing plasmid DNA, mRNA, and gRNA by appropriate methods, including lipid-based transfection and electroporation. Implement molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid extraction and PCR.

  • Perform large-scale cell culture of adherent and suspension mammalian cell lines and primary cells to support high-throughput screens.

  • Develop and execute screening assays to quantify in vitro biomarker expression, including protein expression, cytokine expression, and reporter assays. Establish quantitative methods (e.g. ELISA, MSD, ELLA, Western Blot/JESS, qPCR, Luminex) as needed.

  • Routinely generate, analyze, interpret, and present high quality experimental data in accordance with project timelines. Accountable for project success and results delivery.

  • Maintain an accurate and detailed record of experiments. Execute and troubleshoot protocols, independently adapt new protocols into practice, and query the literature to incorporate additional assays as needed.

  • Communicate research and development findings with internal and external partners by written and oral presentations.

Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • BS/BA with minimum 5 years experience or MS with minimum 3 years of industry experience in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or related science.

  • Demonstrated expertise in mammalian cell culture, cell-based assays and basic molecular biology techniques is required.

  • Experience developing and performing cell-based and bioanalytical assays (Western blot/JESS, colorimetic or luminescent reporter assays, ELISA/Ella, MSD, Luminex, etc.) is required.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience designing, executing and analyzing experiments independently. Ability to independently troubleshoot and correct technical issues.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills, attentive to detail, and the ability to work independently and effectively in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to multi-task to meet aggressive timelines and development goals.

  • Experience with fluorescence imaging, including live-cell and fixed confocal imaging, Opera Phenix and Harmony experience would be a bonus.

  • A desire to make an impact as part of a high-growth, transformational company that is Bold, Relentless, Curious, and Collaborative.

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
