Job Details

We are seeking an independent and technically skilled researcher for a Senior Scientist position within the Preclinical Imaging group based in Worcester, MA.  This is an exciting opportunity to develop approaches that would allow the integrated use of advanced microscopy and imaging techniques for quantitative analysis of biological responses at a cellular and tissue level to support Immunology Discovery Research.  The scientist will closely support the initiatives in complex in vitro model systems, including Organ-on-a-Chip technologies, to provide spatiotemporal profiling of disease states and analysis of drug responses using imaging assays.

Our imaging group leverages confocal and widefield fluorescence microscopy platforms, digital slide scanners and high-content imaging as well as in vivo modalities such as small animal micro-CT, optical and SPECT.  The work will span the fields of biology, physics, bioengineering, computational sciences, and biophysics, so candidates with experience combining two or more of these subjects, will be preferred.  The candidate will work closely with other bioimaging and computational scientists and pathologists in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Development and implementation of image capture pipelines for 2D and 3D culture systems using widefield, confocal, and light-sheet microscopy platforms.
  • Develop quantitative imaging analysis workflows to extract multidimensional data in cells, complex in vitro models (organoids, organ-on-chip etc.) and tissue specimens.
  • Work closely with collaborators on assay conceptualization, experiments, image acquisition and analysis to generate quantitative, decision-making data for project teams.
  • Perform statistical analysis on imaging data to find correlations with other molecular signatures.
  • Leverage machine-learning tools to perform image analysis and identify image-based biomarkers.
  • Collaborate with biologists, pathologists, statisticians, and bioinformatics scientists.
  • Responsibilities will also include optimizing workflows/analyses that integrate in vivo preclinical imaging data with microscopy-based target visualization and multiplexed IF/IHC digital pathology in tissue samples.
  • Awareness of technical developments in the field and apply to applications in biomedical imaging.
  • The role includes opportunities to publish when appropriate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD in Bioengineering, Biology, Physics, Biophysics, or similar fields with 10-12+ (BS), 8-10+ (MS), or 0-4+ (PhD) years of experience.
  • Hands on experience in imaging and microscopy techniques, such as confocal, widefield, light-sheet microscopy.
  • Proficiency in utilizing vendor-based image analysis tools or open-source methods to perform custom analyses, hence, programming skills with application in imaging (e.g., Python, MATLAB) would be particularly valuable.
  • Strong experience with 3D image analyses using Imaris, ImageJ/Fiji or similar programs.
  • Experience in statistical analysis and data visualization.
  • Ability to adopt emerging cell biology technologies to support initiatives in 3D and organ-on-chip models.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with complex or 3D in vitro models (organoids, spheroids, microfluidic organs-on-chips devices) will be considered a plus.
  • Understanding of transport phenomena in biological systems will be desirable.
  • Evidence of leading new initiatives to evaluate and implement new technologies relevant to imaging.
  • Strong record of publications in peer reviewed scientific journals is desirable.

Position will be hired based on level of experience.
