The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION         

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community.  The Protein Expression Laboratory (PEL) within the CRTP provides protein production for National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) drug discovery programs. The PEL creates expression constructs, expresses the encoded recombinant proteins in multiple expression systems, and purifies the recombinant proteins for use in downstream applications including biochemical and biophysical assays and structural biology.

 KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out experiments, under the review of a scientist, in the area of protein purification of a variety of proteins
  • Perform microscale protein purification scouting
  • Perform large-scale protein purification using FPLC technology
  • Carry out extensive quality control on proteins to ensure high-quality reagent production
  • Provide timely updates of project progress to supervisor and other staff in both informal and formal reports
  • Maintain detailed records of all laboratory processes and procedures for quality assurance purposes
  • Communicate with internal and external customers for delivery of reagents and QC information

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation  (CHEA)
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Ability to handle multiple scientific projects with a high degree of accuracy
  • Experience in protein purification
  • Experience with microbial or eukaryotic cell culture
