Principal Research Scientist I – Discovery Ophthalmology Research – Genetic Medicines

Description

AbbVie Discovery Ophthalmology Research is seeking an accomplished scientist with strong collaborative skills to lead a partnered gene therapy collaboration.  S/he/they will contribute to the overall strategy and directly coordinate internal scientific activities,  logistics, and regular scientific communication of a cross-site collaboration with an external partner.  They will also lead discovery-stage program(s) using genetic medicine approaches for ophthalmic indications.  The successful candidate will leverage collaboration with internal and external stakeholders/experts to find answers to scientific questions and move projects forward.  In addition, the candidate should have a strong track record of cross-functional collaboration and project leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Use decision making, organization, and communication skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues from cross-functional teams
  • Work with senior leadership to develop research strategy
  • Identify and validate pharmacodynamic readouts for novel targets
  • Design experiments and generate high-quality experimental data to identify and confirm the mechanism of action of lead candidates identified through target discovery efforts
  • Present data and findings across various platforms, including joint working teams, internal project teams, and extended research and discovery organization meetings
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of new technologies and relevant scientific advances in support of our research goals

  • BS with 14+ years or MS with 12+ years or PhD with 6+ years of relevant work experience in biochemistry or cell biology, pharmacology, oncology, immunology, neurobiology, or a related field
  • Experience in ophthalmology research, including discovery through transition to development in an industry setting is required
  • Experience with gene therapy approaches for the eye is required
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency at complex data analysis and interpretation
  • Must have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with both internal and external stakeholders, and to audiences of diverse backgrounds
  • Highly motivated, self-driven and results-oriented person, comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrate high degree of flexibility in adapting to different projects and personalities as well as excellent networking and relationship-building skills (both internal and external)
