Modernas Small molecules and lipids team is seeking a highly skilled and talented Scientist with a strong analytical background in separation sciences and mass spectrometry, with experience in structural characterization. The individual in this role will help support method development, impurity identification, and structure elucidation of small molecule/lipid components of mRNA nanoparticles, drug substance, drug products and raw materials for pre-clinical to late-stage programs. The individual is expected to work in a highly collaborative, cross functional team environment, and interface with Analytical Development, Process Development, Preformulation and Strategy Teams.
This role will be located at the Moderna Technology Center in Norwood, MA.
Heres What Youll Do:
Develop, optimize, and execute analytical separations, mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography methods focused on impurity profiling, structural elucidation, forced degradation, and quantification of small molecules and lipids using LC-UV/CAD, and high-resolution LC-MS/MS, and GC-MS/FID.
Expand knowledge and research using new analytical techniques to consolidate and optimize methods.
Apply advanced techniques, experimental design and statistical data analysis (DryLabs, JMP, SIMCA, etc.) to characterize raw materials, drug substance and drug products.
Work closely with colleagues within Moderna Process Chemistry, Process Development, Formulation, Analytical Tech Operations, Analytical Sciences and Technology and QC teams to support raw material testing, process optimization, method development, forced degradation studies, hands-on troubleshooting, and technical investigations.
Contribute to scientific and strategy discussions to support Analytical Development programs, initiatives, and investigations.
Demonstrate independent judgment in technique and method selection, study design, generate and contribute to data analysis, technical report writing and provide summary presentations to internal and external stake holders.
Maintain a safe laboratory work environment and be accountable for good documentation practices.
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
PhD in Analytical Chemistry or related field with 1-5 years (or MS with 5+ years) of industry experience in analytical development or in the small-molecule biopharmaceutical space.
Knowledge and experience in small molecule analytics, including method development, quantification, characterization, and structure elucidation (high-resolution MSn)
Strong scientific background in separation techniques and chromatography methods (SPE, RP-IP, HILIC, SEC, CE) including the isolation and identification of low-level impurities.
Familiarity working with large MS data sets and statistical evaluation of data (SIMCA, MPP, Dry Labs).
Knowledge of nucleic acid chemistry and biology and standard methods of analysis of these molecules.
Knowledge of theories, principles and techniques of relevant scientific areas and understanding of industry practices and standards
Excellent communication (oral and written) and attention to detail
Strong interpersonal skills with an eagerness to work with and support colleagues in other departments
Ability to navigate through ambiguity and rapid growth and adapt to change.

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
