The Role:

Moderna is seeking an Automation Engineer III to drive the advancement of our next generation of automated laboratory systems, processes, and equipment. Reporting to the lead of our High throughput Process Development team, the individual in this role will focus on the development of novel solutions and custom automated laboratory equipment for use in the Research, Development, High-Throughput, Pre-Clinical, and Commercial GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) production of messenger RNA based vaccines and therapeutics at Moderna. The candidate will be part of a highly collaborative interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists where communication skills and attention to detail are vital to team achievement. They will play a key role during the design, build, test, deploy, support and improvement lifecycle of key laboratory systems deployed at Moderna. It is expected that the Engineer III candidate has a team mentality and respects the common work areas. The successful candidate must show the ability to quickly master new processes and a drive to be part of a dynamic, fast paced, and highly motivated team. Heres What Youll Do:

  • Drive the design and assembly of integrated automated systems for Technology Development teams with an emphasis on setting up scalable/ transferable processes for producing high quality material and data

  • Work cross-functionally alongside colleagues in Process Development, Manufacturing, Facilities and Engineering, MS&T (Manufacturing Science and Technology), Quality, IT (Information Technology), Operations, and related teams as needed to decide business requirements and deliver novel automated laboratory solutions.

  • Creating modular, user empowering processes that encourage adoption of equipment and processes

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve failures of automated systems

  • Lead junior scientists and engineers to execute scientific and engineering development projects to meet lean timelines

  • Work with in-house informatics and digital teams to integrate data into internal LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) systems

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Engineering, Cellular / Molecular Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or Robotic related field with no less than 5 years experience in Biotech, Pharma, Diagnostics, or related field

  • Understand automation methods and laboratory equipment troubleshooting

  • This candidate will be hands-on, methodical, and well organized with a proven record of accomplishment.

  • Knowledge of CAD modeling, firmware/software development required, Skills required: Analytical approach, creative problem solving, vendor communication, MS Office.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic environment

  • A limitless curiosity enabling quick understanding of new techniques and concepts

  • Ability to multi-task to meet timelines and relentless in pursuing successful outcomes

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. /PHD in Engineering, Cellular / Molecular Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or related field with n less than 2 years' experience in Biotech, Pharma, Diagnostics, or related field

  • The ideal candidate will be highly collaborative, respectful, with an exemplary work ethic in line with our mission.

  • Prior success in developing automated equipment for biopharmaceutical and life sciences teams

  • Familiarity with a variety of sensor technologies, and GMP Experience is a plus

  • Demonstrated experience with Solidworks and PLC programming (i.e., Allen-Bradley CompactLogix).

  • Experience with industrial automation programming (PLC/SCADA/DCS, etc.)

  • Ability to multi-task to meet timelines and relentless in pursuing successful outcomes

  • Exceptional written and oral communication

  • Experience programming industrial / collaborative robot arms or other robotic systems
