The Role:
Moderna is seeking a highly motivated Associated Director in the Pathology Sciences department for a position based at the Cambridge, MA site. The individual will lead a team of scientists and research associates, will be able to deliver in key scientific expertise in investigative pathology/toxicology and in this role, will help support Modernas mRNA technology platform, therapeutics area ventures, and partners by developing and performing routine and specialized in vitro assays for target validation, biomarker discovery, activity screens and investigative pathology/toxicology studies. The individual will help develop hypotheses for potential or identified toxicities and work in collaborative manner to develop and conduct in vitro and/or in vivo studies to elucidate potential mechanisms and proposed follow up strategies. Novel methodologies will be developed internally, and the group will partner with external collaborators, academic labs and CROs to ensure access to the latest technologies. The successful candidate will also need to interpret and analyze data, identify technical issues, recommend solutions, and communicate results to all levels of employees. In addition, the individual will help to achieve department objectives by managing Research associates, Post Doc fellows and Scientists; recruiting, selecting, and training employees. We are looking for a scientist with an incredibly deep toolset to solve problems facing a vast field of new modalities.
Heres What Youll Do:
Create novel experimental designs for mechanistic pathology/toxicology studies designed to assess hypotheses for and evaluate mechanisms of toxicity related to physiological or biochemical functions
Lead a team and contribute to hypotheses generation and drive the science for toxicology issue resolution in drug discovery and development.
Use cutting edge molecular and cellular technologies to help make the next generation of gene and cell therapies. Broad expertise in novel molecular and cellular technologies including next-generation sequencing (NGS), organ-on-a-chip technology and other tissue models.
Probe molecular and cellular mechanisms of toxicity to determine drivers of liver, cardiovascular and other toxicities and guide project teams on safety endpoints
Communicate results clearly and concisely in both oral and written reports. Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills.
Perform in depth pathway/network analysis on data derived from toxicology and other studies.
Collaborate with project team members and peers to anticipate and resolve day-to-day issues working in a matrix organizational structure.
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
MS with 10+ years relevant industry experience.
Familiar with drug discovery and development processes in investigative and regulatory toxicology.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD with 5+ years relevant industry experience.
Experience in conducting experimental pathology/toxicology in vitro studies highly desirable
Competencies
Experience with conventional and advanced cell culture.
Experience working with new modalities - including gene, cell, nanoparticle, and/or microbial therapeutics is highly desirable.
Experience working in a matrixed team environment at a pharmaceutical company and/or CRO is essential.
Broad scientific knowledge including pharmacology, toxicology, pathology, physiology, and biochemistry.
Expertise designing & delivering fit for purpose assays for understanding the mechanism of toxicity of agents including drugs, for biomarker development and application, and for de-risking drug candidates.
Effective communication (written and oral)
Ability to work independently and as part of cross-functional teams
Outcome-oriented and attentive to detail with strong analytical skills
Ability to adapt to frequent change
Strong multi-tasking and time-management skills
