What You’ll Be Doing

Working directly with Technologist and Scientist in our San Diego facility for Software Product Engineering (SPE) Biologics team, you will help design and build technical front-end and back-end solutions that meet the needs of our scientific business areas. In this role you will serve as an architect while developing, helping to lead and shape the Software Engineering group!

  • As an Associate Director Software Engineer, you will bring your technical experience and leadership to design and build scientific solution that exceed product goals.

  • With an approach that accepts failure, and ability to work in ambiguity, you will use your object-oriented development principles to reach creative project solutions to deliver on time.

  • By increasing your development experience, you will ensure the applications achieve the optimal performance, quality, and responsiveness.

  • Using your problem-solving skills, you will strive to quickly identify and correct bottlenecks and fix bugs for optimal user experience.

  • With an attention to detail and proactivity you will seek to maintain existing applications via debugging and continuous updates, ensuring code quality, organization, and automation.

  • As a superb communicator with strong interpersonal skills, you will work and collaborate effectively on a team including with remote team members, to define, design and ship new features.

  • With a high level of curiosity, you will conduct external research and innovation to evolve existing and create new solutions.

What You Should Bring
  • Sophisticated hands-on engineering experience in the software space.

  • Good communication skills and ability to work effectively across multiple business and technical teams.

  • Sophisticated knowledge and practical experience of cloud technologies and software engineering.

  • Web Security and Healthcare compliance experience is a plus.

  • A high level of intellectual curiosity, external perspective, and innovation.

  • Experience with architectural patterns of distributed applications on cloud.

  • Proficiency with Object Oriented Programming, multi-threading, data serialization and REST APIs.

  • Experience with offline storage, threading, and application performance tuning.

  • Familiarity with APIs to connect applications to back-end services.

  • Demonstrated ability to write, perform, automate or lead teams performing unit tests.

  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools and continuous integration (CI/CD).

  • Consistent track record of using Agile software development concepts and associated implementations as demonstrated in a fleshed-out portfolio of software development projects.

Your Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related technical field or High School Diploma/GED with 5+ years of experience in IT technical roles.

  • 5+ years of experience in industry performing software development.

  • Java, C++ or other OOP language.

  • Prior experience with HTTP and APIs (Rest based and others).

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelining.

  • Experience refactoring and re-platforming.

  • Professional experience in delivering software solutions that span the development life cycle, i.e., project initiation, design, development, testing, deployment, maintenance, support, and retirement.

Other Information/Additional Preferences

Lilly currently anticipates that the base salary for this position could range from between $116, 250 to $170, 500 and will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s qualifications for the role, including education and experience. Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance). In addition, Lilly offers a comprehensive benefit program to eligible employees, including eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k); pension; vacation benefits; eligibility for medical, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits; flexible benefits (e.g., healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts); life insurance and death benefits; certain time off and leave of absence benefits; and well-being benefits (e.g., employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities).  Of course, the compensation described above is subject to change and could be higher or lower than the range described above.  Further, Lilly reserves the right to amend, modify, or terminate its compensation and benefit programs in its sole discretion and Lilly’s compensation practices and guidelines will apply regarding the details of any promotion or transfer of Lilly employees.
