SR. SCIENTIST 2 - PEPTIDE CHEMISTRY

General Summary

This position is responsible for accelerating Southern Research's drug discovery pipeline by building and leading peptide and small protein synthesis programs through external contracts and internal discovery programs. The position leads various peptide optimization efforts using a combination of current peptide synthesis techniques, organic chemistry, and analysis of structure-activity relationships with the goal to improve pharmaceutical properties. Leads a team of chemists, proposes strategies and future directions to meet project and departmental goals, and collaborates interdepartmentally.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Synthesizes target molecules, performs purification and QC analysis, proposes alternative synthetic strategies, and overcomes synthetic challenges
  • Posts synthesis modification of peptides, cyclization, and conjugations.
  • Develops sustainable green chemistry peptide and small protein synthesis.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in multiple modes of peptide synthesis including Solid phase peptide synthesis, liquid phase peptide synthesis, semi-synthesis and enzymatic approaches
  • Utilizes a working knowledge of techniques aimed at producing novel conjugates of oligonucleotides, peptides, small molecules and proteins
  • Effectively trouble shoots issues with synthetic processes and independently find solutions.
  • Utilizes various biophysical methods used in peptide characterization, including CD, AUC, UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy.
  • Leads the discovery peptide scale up group.
  • Prioritizes and accelerates Peptide Therapeutics to the clinic.
  • Works closely with team members to understand and validate requirements for synthesis scale up.
  • Oversees and prioritizes the work of contractors to meet critical timelines.
  • Communicate relevant information and results to chemistry team lead as well as other cross functional organizations within Southern Research.
  • Identifies, researches, compiles and evaluates data sources, background information and/or technology related to the area of specialization.
  • Contributes to publications and patents derived from project data.
  • Maintains external awareness of scientific discipline through familiarity with current scientific literature.
  • Develops resolutions to an assortment of problems of moderately complex scope.
  • Attends technical staff and departmental meetings.
  • Routinely presents data during internal group meetings and/or to external collaborators
  • Supervises junior researchers and/or external contractors. Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Requirements/Minimum Qualifications

  • Education and experience:
    • BS in Chemistry or related discipline and 16 years of laboratory experience performing organic synthesis; or
    • MS in Chemistry or related discipline and 13 years of laboratory experience performing organic synthesis; or
    • Ph.D. in Chemistry or related discipline and 7 years of laboratory experience performing organic synthesis.
  • Must have a strong background in non-natural amino acids and bioconjugation.
  • Demonstrated experience in the formulation and stability assessment of peptide drug candidates
  • Prior experience with peptide synthesis instrumentation, purification, and analysis by HPLC and mass spectrometry.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites Products and chemical drawing programs
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding, and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Work Environment & Conditions

This position is a laboratory environment and requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including:

  • Safety glasses
  • Laboratory coats
  • Nitrile and latex gloves (varies based on tasks)

Physical Demands

  • Ability to perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
