The Role:

As part of our vision, Moderna is committed to invest in R&D to further expand our impact on patients. We are building an independent research and business unit for genomic medicines, called Moderna Genomics (mGx) based in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA. mGx will be an innovation engine for the company focused on discovering and delivering the next generation of in vivo gene editing and nonviral gene therapies. Moderna Genomics strives to be an industry leader in genomic medicines.

Moderna Genomics, Gene editing and DNA repair team in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA seeks an enthusiastic, experienced, and motivated scientist to contribute to portfolio expansion initiatives. The successful candidate will possess a curious scientific mind, flexible intellect, and the ability to effectively matrix with cross-functional teams. The candidate will leverage his/her/their deep scientific expertise in DNA repair pathways (BER, MMR, HR/NHEJ) and/or gene editing (CRISPR/Cas, ZFN, megaTAL or other nucleases) to design and drive discovery research strategies to characterize the activity of mRNA-encoded proteins against disease targets of interest in cell culture and preclinical models. This role will have the opportunity to make an impact through pioneering foundational protocols and experimental strategy leveraging a broad array of molecular and cellular biological approaches. He/she/they will be key contributors to building the team and culture for this new initiative.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Apply deep expertise in mammalian cell biology, DNA repair and/or gene editing to design experiments to characterize on- and off-target gene editing outcomes

  • Design, develop, and deploy a variety of assays spanning a range of approaches including qPCR, NGS library construction, Westerns, capillary electrophoresis westerns (Protein Simple), MSD/ELISA, and other molecular and cellular biological techniques

  • Collaborate with core functional groups to execute specialized analyses (e.g. computational biology, in vivo pharmacology, protein engineering, disease experts)

  • Design and oversee the creation and propagation of cell lines and primary cells, including bespoke iPSC-derived disease models in collaboration with CRO partners

  • Serve a subject matter expert in both internally and/or externally-facing cross-functional teams

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • A PhD in Cell or Molecular Biology, Genetics or related field with 5+ years of post-graduate experience.

  • Ability to independently design, analyze, and trouble-shoot controlled experiments

  • Innovation and versatility to conceive and evolve research plans based on current and emerging scientific literature

  • Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture-based experimentation including propagation, transfection, electroporation of cell lines and primary cells, and generation of model cell lines

  • Depth and breadth of experience in molecular and cellular techniques

  • Excellent scientific judgment and a track record of success

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and ability to maintain detailed research records.

  • Experience working independently and collaboratively in small teams.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects and collaborate in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
