The Role:

As part of our vision, Moderna is committed to invest in R&D to further expand our impact on patients. We are building an independent research and business unit for genomic medicines, called Moderna Genomics (mGx) based in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA. mGx will be an innovation engine for the company focused on discovering and delivering the next generation of in vivo gene editing and nonviral gene therapies. It is our intention to be an industry leader in genomic medicines.

Moderna Genomics, Gene Editing Innovation (GEI) team seeks a curious and innovation-driven scientist with lab management experience to contribute to our initiatives to deliver the best-in-class gene-editing systems for precision therapeutics, leveraging our proven mRNA and delivery platforms. The candidate will have the unique role of driving both laboratory research and team management, working closely with GEI team leaders. The candidate will contribute to discovery research to characterize and engineer novel gene editing platforms, streamline existing protocols to establish SOPs for the GEI team. The candidate will engage in molecular biology, high-throughput assay development, and gene-editing experiments in mammalian cell and preclinical models, in collaboration with the broader mGx scientists. This role will have the opportunity to work at the cutting-edge of gene-editing space, make an impact through pioneering foundational protocols and experimental data using an array of molecular and cellular approaches.

This role will have the opportunity to make an impact by help building and managing a team with head of GEI to establish core functions, enabling the invention of new gene editing modalities that can be delivered safely to benefit an increased number of patients. You will be broadly involved in scientific discovery efforts within mGx. Further, as an early member of GEI, the successful candidate will be a key player in shaping and building the team and culture for this new initiative.

Heres What Youll Do:

  • Help manage and streamline laboratory workflows and improve SOPs for discovery research

  • Train new members of the team on basic assays spanning a range of biochemistry and molecular biology techniques, including gel electrophoresis, PCR, qPCR, NGS

  • Apply experience in molecular biology, mammalian cell culture, high-throughput assays to carry out experiments with mRNA-encoded gene editors.

  • Perform cell culture, including maintenance and manipulation of cell lines and primary cells

  • Maintain clear and detailed research notebook

  • Work well as part of a team

  • Present findings to larger team and key stakeholders

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

About Moderna

In over 10 years since its inception, Moderna has transformed from a research-stage company advancing programs in the field of messenger RNA (mRNA), to an enterprise with a diverse clinical portfolio of vaccines and therapeutics across seven modalities, a broad intellectual property portfolio in areas including mRNA and lipid nanoparticle formulation, and an integrated manufacturing plant that allows for rapid clinical and commercial production at scale. Moderna maintains alliances with a broad range of domestic and overseas government and commercial collaborators, which has allowed for the pursuit of both groundbreaking science and rapid scaling of manufacturing. Most recently, Moderna's capabilities have come together to allow the authorized use and approval of one of the earliest and most effective vaccines against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moderna's mRNA platform builds on continuous advances in basic and applied mRNA science, delivery technology and manufacturing, and has allowed the development of therapeutics and vaccines for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases. Moderna has been named a top biopharmaceutical employer by Science for the past seven years. To learn more, visit www.modernatx.com.
