Specific Responsibilities:

The Virology department at Gilead Sciences is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative, and experienced leader for our Respiratory and Emerging Viruses Clinical Virology group which supports our growing effort on the development of therapeutics for respiratory and emerging diseases. The successful candidate will lead a group of scientists and will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to design and oversee non-clinical studies, contribute to the execution of clinical trials, and support regulatory filings for investigational (IND) and new drug applications (NDA). This is also a unique opportunity to collaborate with top scientists worldwide on the development of therapeutics for diverse viral pathogens that present threats to global public health and to contribute to Gilead's overall strategy in this area.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

  • Lead and coordinate all clinical virology activities related to the development of new therapeutics for respiratory and emerging viruses
  • Supervise and mentor a team of scientists
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams, including leading essential parts of drug development projects.
  • Lead virology assay development and implementation, data analysis, writing & reviewing key regulatory documents for investigational and new drug applications
  • Closely partner and collaborate with Gilead drug discovery teams as well as other Gilead Research functions.
  • Communicate high impact data and study results to project teams, R&D management, and the broader scientific community. Publish data in leading scientific journals
  • Design, execute and oversee studies with academic, government, and industry collaborators, and vendors to support evaluation of drug candidates and investigational drug products.
  • Expand knowledge of scientific advances in relevant fields and competitive activity from literature, scientific meetings, and external contacts.


Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in virology, infectious diseases, immunology, or relevant life sciences discipline
  • Minimum of 15 years of post-doctoral experience with proven success in industrial settings, including drug development and regulatory experience
  • Goal-oriented and effective leader
  • Experience in virology and molecular biology as well as knowledge of animal models.
  • Excellent management, coaching and mentoring skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to translate ideas and data into concise written and/or verbal communications for publications, conference presentations, pharmacology and clinical study reports, and regulatory filings (IND and NDA).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and coordinate external scientific partnerships on complex projects.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and excellence in effectively managing multiple projects/priorities with high capacity for learning quickly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional and team-based environment.
  • Effective team player who thrives in a high pace environment where excellence, accountability and innovation are critical for success.
