Senior member of the Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies (FDBT) team responsible for  Employee Health & Safety and Sustainability & ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) programs to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal ordinances regarding safety programs, health, environmental plans, as well as ensuring industry standards are attained.   The Associate Director will also be responsible for defining and developing comprehensive and effective plans to ensure FDBT delivers on Sustainability & ESG while collaborating and coordinating across functions and local communities on resolving environmental and social issues.  Lead the strategic development ad continual enhancement of Employee Health & Safety initiatives as well as enterprise ESG goals and initiatives that aim to strengthen risk mitigation and create long-term business value for the company.

The Associate Director will be responsible for managing all Environmental, Health, and Safety programs as well as ensuring industry standards are attained.  The Associate Director will also be responsible for convening internal ESG conversations to drive corporate ESG strategy and produce recommendations on actions, policy, or behavior changes by working with internal stakeholders to enact these recommendations and develop a cohesive narrative around them.

The FDBT facilities are modern biotech manufacturing facilities with analytical labs, product, and process development labs as well as vaccine and protein/antibody manufacturing and purification labs.  The successful candidate will be required to build and maintain strong relationships and leverage existing experience from strategic and tactical roles in large organizations, projects, and/or operations to guide cross-functional team members on the journey.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee and direct activities necessary to ensure compliance with all corporate, local, state, and federal regulations. Interface with regulatory agencies and personnel to direct environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Continual monitoring of the ever-evolving ESG landscape, with a focus on peer activity and ongoing regulatory and reporting developments around ESG and climate.
  • Measuring and quantifying FDBT's long-term environmental, social, and governance risks and proactively manage the company's strategy and submissions for ESG ratings and rankings.
  • Development, maintenance, and execution of regular cadence of ESG reporting, both internal and external, including production of an annual ESG Report, and other reporting products as needed ensuring all aspects of ESG data collection, reporting, and disclosure against ESG frameworks including SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board), GRI (Global Reporting Initiatives), and others.
  • Oversee team working closely with scientists, process engineers, microbiologists, and customers to ensure the biological process in development or manufacturing is executed in a safe and environmentally contained manner.
  • Oversee and monitor the safety and environmental compliance of site programs, including overseeing the programs and training of site personnel, and providing recommendations to prevent future health and safety problems.
  • Lead and drive the build-out and strategic development of the multi-pronged strategy for the EHS and Sustainability & ESG programs
  • Collaborate and coordinate across functions in creating and driving engagement opportunities that serve employees, suppliers, consumers, the community while aligning with FDB's mission and vision.
  • Shape the EHS and ESG strategies for the company and define the resources and decisions that are needed to ensure goals are met and integrate EHS and ESG goals into functional areas.
  • Drive and implement the EHS and Sustainability & ESG agenda to support the organization's objectives, mission, and vision.
  • Work in partnership with FDB's local community partners.
  • Present and align solutions and their impact with the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Develop dashboards and reporting tools to track performance for various audiences (employees, management, executive leadership, stakeholders, etc.).
  • Work with the FUJIFILM organization to ensure alignment between corporate and site-specific Health, Safety, Sustainability & ESG strategies.
  • Work with leadership to enhance FDB's reputation as an employer of choice as a responsible community member and key local partner.
  • Advise, implement, and participate in community engagement opportunities. Act as liaison to various community groups, involving developing grassroot efforts to further enhance the sustainability and ESG efforts of the organization.
  • Act as a thought leader in sustainability and ESG, understanding current and future challenges with the industry, as well as local social climate, and educating and prioritizing these issues with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Continuous monitoring of performance against corporate ESG goals. Regular benchmarking of ESG performance against peers, and against industry trends and best practices. Proactive identification of issues, risks, opportunities, and trends that may impact the company from an ESG and corporate responsibility perspective.
  • Ensure and communicate regularly with staff and management regarding containment processes, SOPs, and safety issues that may arise as well as workplace hazard abatement, waste chemical identification and collection for proper disposal etc.
  • Investigate accidents and/or incidents to identify root causes and provide recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Functional knowledge of the physio-chemical properties and pathogenicity of a large range of viruses and bacteria.
  • Strong functional knowledge of the latest state of environmental control procedures, engineering controls, and monitoring of viruses and bacteria facilities as well as control and decontamination procedures.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal communications and influencing skills . The ability to connect with employees as a training and Subject Matter Expert (SME).
  • Demonstrated experience working with and building positive relationships with OSHA and other federal/state/local officials.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading EHS including audits and inspections developing remediation plans as needed.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable, moving and managing projects with different objectives, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Build and maintain partnership and relationships with different stakeholders
  • Broad and proven knowledge of Sustainability & ESG related matters and the ability to implement the knowledge into work practices.
  • Highly organized with strong project management skills
  • Experience leading and facilitating group process and collaboration
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills required with ability to track, measure, and identify improvement solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Creative thinker and problem-solver with strong interest in executing new strategies to drive increasing value to our customers, partners, suppliers, shareholders, and employees.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of ESG frameworks, standards and trends is required.
  • Demonstrated experience on the ESG landscape, including strong understanding of all ESG reporting frameworks, ratings agencies, and evolving regulatory developments on ESG, as well as familiarity with leading ESG influencers and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferably in life science, environmental science, safety engineering, business, finance or equivalent with a minimum of 10 years of experience in driving and advocating partnerships and relationships with local, national, regional, and global stakeholder groups; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree preferably in life science, environmental science, safety engineering, business, finance or equivalent with a minimum of 12 years of experience in driving and advocating partnerships and relationships with local, national, regional, and global stakeholder groups.
  • Leadership and/or management of laboratory/facility environmental, health, safety, and/or ESG program activities, with a minimum of 5 years as a manager, responsible for decision making and directing the progress of staff and programs.
  • Experience in developing and implementing corporate ESG strategy and major initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or graduate degree in EHS, ESG, CSR or a related discipline is preferred
  • Professional Certification e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP), Registered Bio-Safety Professional (RBP), etc. from a nationally recognized organization
  • Experience working in a cGMP environment

 

Salary  Starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
