OBJECTIVE:

  • The Center for External Innovation (CEI) Externalization Business Development (BD) team is - responsible for all Research and Development-stage BD out-licensing and divestment activities across all R&D Therapeutic Areas

  • The Associate Director CEI BD Externalizations will support the Head of R&D Externalizations and Senior Director of R&D Externalizations in the execution of the out-licensing/alliance strategy across various Therapeutic areas. In this role, he/she is responsible to support or lead as assigned the evaluation, due diligence, structuring, negotiation and presentation of BD opportunities to key governance bodies, and supporting the execution of endorsed strategies, focusing primarily on R&D externalization opportunities at the global/ multi-regional level, but also including other R&D-driven strategic alliances such as acquisitions where appropriate.

  • The position is responsible for transacting key priority deals aligned with R&D Externalization strategy and is a critical function to the core Externalization BD team; and also may flex to lead transactions on key priority in-licensing and collaboration deals aligned with Takeda therapeutic area strategies and builds across the R&D pipeline

  • Will serve in an ambassador role working directly with internal and external key opinion leaders and operational leadership within CEI, Global Business Development (GBD), and Takeda R&D including Takeda Ventures Inc. (TVI)

  • This position requires demonstrated leadership skills, an aptitude for negotiation, and the ability to collaborate across Takeda global, matrixed teams to deliver on endorsed strategies resulting in transactions of all deal types (e.g., out-licensing, divestment, NewCo formation) that meet the Company’s goals.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Build a strong, worldwide outreach program by establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with senior management and BD groups of potential partner companies, key principal investigators and technology transfer groups at research institutions, and the venture capital investment community

  • Leads or supports business development engagements and leads or supports negotiations of transactions focusing primarily on R&D out-licensing, R&D-driven divestment, externalization partnerships, including equity carve-outs, newco creation and/or joint ventures as may be appropriate.

  • Develop a wide range of deal structures that meet the Company’s goals with the flexibility to accommodate partners’ requirements and review/negotiate the key contractual terms by collaborating with Legal/IP team and cross-functional team

  • Performs complex analyses of a range of opportunities with significant financial investment or in accordance with growth and profitability objectives.

  • Manage aspects of due diligence processes; key contact with partners, prioritize issues and questions, assemble cross-functional teams, manage review, and integrate into deal assessment.

  • Prepare and present materials to R&D leadership, Therapeutic Area Units (TAU) leadership, and for internal governance approvals

  • Supports the execution of strategic initiatives to advance Company’s mission and objectives for licensing/ strategic alliances across various Therapeutic Areas.

  • Manages business relationships and counsels business partners, internally and externally, on transaction and strategic issues pertaining to licensing/ strategic alliance arrangements.

  • Develops and maintains key relationships across a broad sphere of influence, both internally and externally.

  • Acts as a thought partner to the TAU/DDU (Drug Discovery Unit) Heads and ensures Externalization BD strategy is aligned and supported. This role challenges the Leadership Teams to think innovatively when it comes to partnering with external parties

  • Articulates Takeda's Externalization goals and practices in public forums (e.g., partnering meetings) and is an effective ambassador for the Takeda global BD brand to ensure Takeda is perceived as a “Partner of Choice”

EDUCATION, BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

  • Ph.D., M.D. plus/or MBA equivalent degree is required, 10 years of post-degree experience preferred, specifically post-doctoral and/or bio-pharma industry experience is strongly preferred as is training in business analytics and/or commercial discipline.

  • At least 3+ years experience in complex and global deal negotiations along with a successful track record in sourcing BD opportunities, deal negotiations, and closures in discovery, preclinical, clinical and commercial areas. A comprehensive deal sheet demonstrating a substantial record of executed deals is required.

  • Business Leadership –confidence, decisiveness, and a willingness to listen to influence as well as engage others in the accomplishment of functional goals.

  • Communication – ability to communicate ideas and data both verbally and written in a persuasive and appropriate manner

  • Analytical Skills – ability to analyze a wide variety of scientific data, financial figures, and market research data to make strategic decisions

  • Pharmaceutical Industry Acumen – ability to define, develop and implement business solutions based on trends, opportunities, needs, and market direction within the pharmaceutical industry and health care environment.

  • Significant experience in the Pharma/Biotech industry and preferably including both preclinical and clinical drug developmentDeep understanding of drug development, approval, and commercialization processes

  • A well-established scientific and business development network within the industry is strongly preferred along with a progressive knowledge of innovative alliance structures, industry trends, and competitive issues related to pharmaceutical BD

  • Results-oriented, creative, self-starter with the ability to deliver high-quality deliverables on time that are appropriate for review by senior management

  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to be effective in a matrix environment

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Willingness to travel to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips

  • Some international travel may be required

  • Requires up to 30% travel

Base Salary Range: $143,500.00 to $ 205,000.00. Employees may also be eligible for Short Term and Long-Term Incentive benefits. Employees are eligible to participate in Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, 401(k), Charitable Contribution Match, Holidays, Personal Days & Vacation, Tuition Reimbursement Program and Paid Volunteer Time Off.

The final salary offered for this position may take into account a number of factors including, but not limited to, location, skills, education, and experience.
