Job Description

About the role:

At Takeda, we are committed to lifelong learning.

To that end, Takeda's summer internship program blends real world experience with an extensive overview of the pharmaceutical industry. Knowledgeable mentors will provide guidance as you gain professional hands-on experience to start your career or further develop in your expertise.

The summer internship program is a full-time commitment of 12 weeks in length and offers a unique perspective into a world-class pharmaceutical company. Our internship program also provides you the opportunity to network with people at Takeda through various planned events and activities.

Project Outline:

A 3-month internship project during summer of 2023 (mid May - mid August or June - August) focusing on high-throughput (HTP) demonstration to support “miniturization” of an existing bench scale down model of downstream process.Robocolumns will be utilized to demonstrate comparability towards a mid to late phase oncology molecule program (Mav-01;TAK-186) focusing on feasibility of HTP workflow compared to a traditional, bench scale workflow. Alternative option is to demonstrate HTP workflow for a commercial phase program (Replagal; TAK-675). Intern will learn to use liquid handler (Tecan) to perform Robocolumn runs, alongside a baseline establishment for the standard bench-scale operational practices including but not limited to AKTA FPLC, column packing and qualification, platform downstream purification scheme, as well as learning mechanism of action on bio-separation techniques such as chromatography.

Output of the project is to showcase comparability of a truncated, miniturized purification process using the robocolumns against the low-throughput bench scale model(s). Higher throughput and lesser material consumption is intended for efficiency/smarter lab practices, but limitations and economics of HTP method will be presented along side to provide as case studies into a HTP playbook/toolbox. Work performed is expected to add value to strengthen the usability of HTP in DSP workflow e.g. pre-characterization screening or developability screening at early stages of development.

Role is expected for an on-site lab work in Lexington Massachusetts, but can be aligned to accommodate a hybrid work setting if a remote task is applicable, e.g. on-site work 3-4 days a week plus 1-2 days work from home.

How you will contribute:
  • Deadline-driven with a high level of organizational and planning skills

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work well in teams, effectively manage projects, and present ideas clearly and concisely.

  • Global mindset to grow in a diverse work environment

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills

  • One year of hands-on, laboratory-based research in a chemical engineering, biochemical/biological engineering, chemistry, or similar lab (pipetting, solution prep, record keeping and data analysis)

  • Theoretical knowledge of bioseparations techniques (e.g., chromatography, filtration)

  • (Optional) Hands-on experience operating chromatography systems (e.g., AKTA)

  • (Optional) Statistical analysis (e.g., JMP)

Requirements / Qualifications:

As stated above, Takeda is committed to lifelong learning opportunities. To that end, our internship program is open to currently enrolled students seeking early experiences and non-traditional candidates interested in making a career change and gaining new experience.

The requirements for these two groups of candidates are specified below:

  • Must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week), within core business hours (8 AM-5 PM), for a minimum of 12 weeks during the summer months

  • Must provide a cover letter explaining why you are seeking this internship, relevant experience that makes you a good candidate, and what you hope to achieve through the experience

    • Strong preference for non-traditional candidates with some experience relevant to the desired intern role
