Job Description
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Research Scientist to join the Discovery Sciences and Technologies (DST) Department and contribute to our biochemistry and cell biology capabilities to enable the identification and nomination of small molecule and biologics drug candidates across all therapeutic areas at Gilead.
DST Department members are responsible for the design and execution of rigorous, quantitative, and physiologically relevant in vitro biochemical and functional cellular assays. They collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams to discover and evolve drug candidates from lead identification efforts during project inception to the characterization of the final development candidate.
The successful candidate will be an integral member of the DST research team and work closely with various Research functions such as medicinal chemistry, structural biology and protein therapeutics to advance transformational therapies into clinical development for patients. Gilead is a highly matrixed organization and the ability to work effectively across diverse functional groups and therapeutic areas is a key attribute for this role.

Specific Responsibilities:
- Develop robust biochemical and cellular assays to measure drug efficacy, potency as well as functional activity.
- Perform automation enabled high-throughput screen to discover hit molecule and robust functional assays to support lead optimization across therapeutic modalities.
- Apply diverse in-vitro pharmacology methods and approaches to elucidate mechanisms of action of drug candidate on target proteins and cellular signaling pathways.
- Provide translational biological evidence in support of candidates moving toward clinical investigation
- Provide scientific insight and in-depth data interpretation to inform decision making at the project team and leadership levels.
- Apply cutting-edge chemical biology and functional genomic approaches to gain insights of fundamental biology in the in vitro setting and participate in the novel target validation effort when needed.
- Evaluate and implement new technologies to support advancement of internal programs and core group functions.
- May involve mentoring associates, providing scientific direction and guidance.
- Contribute to several projects at any given time, work successfully in a cross-functional team environment and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related field
- 0 - 5 years of postdoctoral research experience with evidence of relevant publications
- In-depth knowledge and research experience in one of the following research fields: immunology, oncology, or virus-host interaction
- Well-versed in cell line development and primary cell culture, cellular signaling and developing biochemical and cell-based functional assays
- Solid proficiency in molecular biology and cell biology techniques such as PCR, RT-PCR, immunoblot, flow cytometry and common protein quantification methods (ELISA, MSD, Luminex, etc.)
- Experience in utilizing chemical or genetic perturbation to interrogate cellular phenotype, drug pharmacology and MOA with high-dimensional readout (e.g., single-cell RNA seq or high-content imaging) is preferred.
- Strong data processing and analysis skills, with familiarity with R or Python language for data analysis being a plus.
- Strong experimental design and troubleshooting skills, can document laboratory procedures and experiments with great attention to detail and the ability to multitask effectively in a dynamic fast-paced research environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and effective interpersonal communication skills are essential.
