The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program that performs cutting-edge research to improve our understanding of AIDS-associated disease, including studies intended to facilitate the improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HIV infection and AIDS. The Program consists of several research sections headed by Principal Investigators, whose work spans from fundamental molecular virology through in vitro studies, to in vivo studies in non-human primate (NHP) models. The ACVP also has several Research Support Cores that provide critical and often unique technical support capabilities to ACVP laboratories and other laboratories within the NCI and NIH and to extramural investigators.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
The ACVP is looking for a Post-baccalaureate
Fellow to support a specific, one year NIH Office of AIDS Research-funded project
in the Viral Persistence Section of the ACVP. The successful candidate will be able to work in a team-oriented
environment, consistently follow detailed protocols and instructions, and keep
careful records. Duties will involve the utilization of standard molecular
biology, immunology, and next-generation sequencing-based techniques,
including, but not limited to cell culture, primer design, nucleic acid
isolation, digital PCR, sequencing data analysis and using Microsoft Office
(Word, Powerpoint and Excel) for data summary and presentation.
The
key responsibilities of the applicant will be:
- Setting up and maintaining cell cultures
- Observing and learning the techniques related to digital PCR
- Handling samples for next generation sequencing and data analysis
- Summarizing and presenting data
**THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING APPROVAL**
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a B.S. degree in Virology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, or related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- No experience is required beyond the B.S. degree
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a time-sensitive manner
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Previous experience in laboratory
- Cell culture experience
- Basic understanding of HIV biology
- DNA/RNA isolation
- PCR or Realtime PCR experience
