Job Details

We are seeking a PhD or equivalent scientist in Statistical Genomics at the Associate Manager level to develop methods and perform statistical analyses in large family collections and cohorts of rare and common diseases in which relatedness can be exploited for candidate gene discovery. The RGC Founder and Special Populations portfolio consists of more than 20 active collaborations with investigators worldwide, including more than 160,000 sequenced participants from founder and consanguineous populations. Discovery of novel causative genes through family-based analyses will provide a deeper understanding of human biology and identify novel therapeutic targets for both rare and common conditions.

As an Associate Manager Statistical Genetics, a typical day may include:

  • Develop and implement innovative statistical methods for the analysis of rare and mendelian disorders.

  • Perform proband/family-based genetic analyses including TDT, segregation and linkage analysis, mixed-model association analysis, identity-by-descent (IBD) mapping, genealogy-based methods, homozygosity mapping and other analytic approaches that capitalize and use relatedness and pedigree structure.

  • Perform and apply bioinformatics analyses to assess biological plausibility of genetic findings to disease phenotypes.

  • Work with Founder & Special Populations and Therapeutic Area Genetics teams to validate and extend potentially interesting findings in family-based studies to rare and common diseases in large RGC study populations (ex. Geisinger DiscovEHR, UK Biobank).

  • Apply biological insights, use internal and external annotations, and review published literature to prioritize genetic discoveries for functional follow-up.

  • Work with Early Clinical Development and other clinical teams to provide genetics support for call-back studies and clinical trials for rare/Mendelian diseases.

This role might be for you if:

  • You have outstanding communication skills and an ability to summarize and present the results of human genetic studies to a variety of technical audiences.

  • You thrive in an interactive environment with a diverse team of colleagues.

  • You area able to provide mentorship and guidance to more junior colleagues to help them develop their full potential and build new skills and abilities.

To be considered for this role, you must have completed your PhD with 0-2+ years of postdoctoral experience. A strong background in statistical genetics, ideally with applications to family-based analyses and rare-disease genetics. Experience analyzing and interpreting whole exome sequencing and genotyping studies (ex. variant level QC, proband/family-based genetic analyses, and interpretation of association signals from population studies). Experience with standard statistical approaches and tools for family studies (ex. TDT, segregation analysis, IBD mapping, homozygosity mapping, linear mixed models). Experience with study design and analyses of family studies with differing modes of inheritance and pedigree structures. Familiarity and experience querying public databases and bioinformatic approaches to understanding gene function, biology, and pathogenic plausibility (ex. Clinvar, HGMD). Broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities at all stages of analysis of genetic and genomic data – ranging from design, quality control, population structure, batch effects, association analysis, functional interpretation, and data visualization. Experience with multiple tools for genetic analyses of family-based data and/or multiple programming languages for scientific computing including Python, R, C++ and bash.
