AbbVie is searching for a highly motivated individual to fill a Sr. Scientist I position in the Analytical Development group at AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester MA. Analytical Development is responsible for the development, qualification, and execution of analytical methods to provide product and process understanding for biological entities from discovery through commercial stages.

The candidate will be part of the Biomolecular Interactions Group within Analytical Development that is mainly focused on method development and implementation of various immunoassays to monitor process impurities and to assess potency of AbbVie’s Biologics.  Some other techniques/methods utilized in the group include 1) surface plasmon resonance using Biacore for assessment of antigen binding and binding of antibody Fc receptors; 2) qPCR to measure levels of residual DNA and mycoplasma and 3) SDS-PAGE/immunoblots to assess antibody reagent recognition of host cell proteins .  

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and testing of potency and impurity assays and will contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation within the group.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, optimize and qualify ELISA methods to examine biomolecular interactions and monitor process-related impurities
  • Address and solve technical problems independently
  • Contribute to host cell protein control strategy and risk assessment
  • Contribute to structure-function relationship study to enhance product understanding
  • Represent analytical function in CMC group setting and work collaboratively to drive biological program development
  • Provide project updates and results to cross-functional team and management in both oral and written communication
  • Conceive and implement innovative ideas, evaluate and integrate state-of-the-art technology to improve work process, and demonstrate a high level of scientific initiative
  • Author technical reports, support and contribute to regulatory filings
  • Organize and document data and results in an electronic lab notebook
  • Efficient IT skills (MS office, in particular EXCEL, other software to support work)

Qualifications:

  • BS, MS or PhD degree in biological sciences with 10+ (BS), 8+ (MS) or 0+ (PhD) years of relevant experience in academic or biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of hands-on experience with ELISA and other relevant assays required
  • Sound scientific understanding of immunoassays
  • Demonstrated record of independent thought, creativity and scientific accomplishment (e.g. peer reviewed journal publications, patents)
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute and interpret critical experiments to answer scientific questions
  • Goal oriented team player, with problem solving skills, critical thinking ability, and excellent communication skills
  • Highly motivated and independent with an ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent documentation skills: documents work
  • Automation experience (ie Hamilton), and experience with FRET, HTRF, and 2D gels/westerns a plus
  • Experience providing bioassay and gene therapy support a plus
  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials
