The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Research Associate I
position would provide blood processing support to an NIH-funded clinical
project as part of the BioProcessing and Trial Logistics group
(BPTL). The BPTL is part of the Clinical Services Program (CSP)
within the Applied/Developmental Research Directorate (ADRD) at the Frederick
National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR).
KEY
ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receipt and
unpacking of specimens shipped to the laboratory from outside clinics
- Separation of
human blood samples into sub fractions
- Isolation of
buccal cells from mouthwash samples
- Aliquoting
urine samples using an automated liquid handler
- Maintaining
specimen shipment temperature data logger records
- Reprogramming
temperature data loggers for return to clinical collection locations
- Handling frozen
material, using dry ice & specialized dry ice workstations
- Packaging
specimens for transport
- General
laboratory upkeep, equipment monitoring, and inventory control
- Daily use of
Excel, Word, Outlook
- Daily
communication with team members & internal support groups
- Assisting with
supply shipments, as needed
- Assisting in
the movement of laboratory supplies from storage to lab, as needed, using
courier van
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years experience in a BSL-2 environment and knowledge of aseptic technique
- Previous experience working with serologic pipets, micropipettes, and cryovials
- Experience with Microsoft Suite, to include Excel, Word, PowerPoint
- Ability to work a fixed Tuesday – Saturday schedule
- Ability to lift 25 pounds routinely
- Ability to focus for extended periods of time
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Clean driving record
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- Previous
experience with specimen inventory management software
- Previous
experience with relational databases
- Previous
experience with label printing software such as Codesoft or BarTender
- Previous
experience working with human blood and other potentially infectious material
- Previous
experience with liquid handling systems
- Previous IATA certification
JOB HAZARDS

- This position may require continuous or intermittent exposure to and exertion in environmental conditions such as working outdoors, temperature extremes, humidity extremes. etc. as part of the job
