PacBio is developing optical systems for the world’s most accurate DNA sequencers. The Menlo Park R&D team is seeking an Instrument Optical Engineer.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on the design, commercial sourcing, and qualification of optical hardware ranging from components (optical fiber, photonic chips, lenses, waveplates, filters, etc.) to lasers, optomechanical assemblies, and full end to end optical systems in sequencing instruments.
  • Design, build, qualify and operate test apparatuses for lasers, lenses and other components.
  • Design and execute protocols for HALT and HAST and conduct failure analyses.
  • Develop failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs).
  • Work closely with the NPI team to transfer designs into production.
  • Follow the optical hardware into full sequencer instruments and evaluate reliability and consistency across instruments.
  • Use advanced analytical and computational skills to interpret and visualize experimental test data.
  • Present findings in collaborative intergroup meetings including team members from Instrument Control Software, Single Molecule Biophotonics, Sequencing Integration, Primary Analysis, and others.
  • Maintain optical test and fabrication equipment including optical fiber inspection, cleaving and splicing tools.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or higher degree in Optical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Physics or a related field.
  • Hands on optics lab experience in an academic or industry setting is required.
  • At least three months industrial experience (Internships are acceptable).
  • Proficiency in Zemax (OpticsStudio) is required.
  • Proficiency in the use of Matlab for data acquisition, analysis, and visualization is required.
  • Proficiency in Python is required.
  • Proficiency in Solidworks is desired.
