Engineering Manager, Data Platforms

At Recursion, we combine experimental biology, chemistry, automation and artificial intelligence to quickly and efficienty identify treatments for diseases. We generate a wide variety of data across different biological and chemical domains. Reporting to the Associate Director of Engineering for this group, the Data Platforms Engineering Manager will lead the teams that inject, model, transform and visualize the data for our data lake and handle the storage and access for complex data types in the cloud and on our supercomputer.

The Impact You’ll Make

• Enable your teams for scale - The data lake and object storage teams are working to streamline access to more than 20 PB of high dimensional biological data in order to accelerate the process of drug discovery. You will be responsible for thinking across our systems to identify and prioritize key capabilities to invest in.
• Act as a mentor, coach, and sponsor - You will share your technical and nontechnical knowledge and experiences, delivering impact, learning, and growth across teams at Recursion. We believe that the best work comes from working across organizational boundaries and you will have opportunities to partner with groups across the business.
• Develop and execute on plans - You will own delivery on the goals of your team, revisiting and adjusting expectations with the teams and stakeholders as needs change. Beyond your team, you will be a key member of your engineering leadership peer group, looking across our teams and identifying opportunities to work across groups to create a meaningful engineering culture.

The Team You’ll Join 

You will be the manager of two teams: data lake and object storage platform. The data lake team launched our data lake/house in the summer of 2022 and has a goal to make it the source for all non-operational analysis in 2023. This involves creating a curated, discoverable, queryable, and actionable hub for a broad range of customers from data scientists to analysts to biologists and everyone in between across the business. The object storage platform is focused on storage and access of more than 20 PB of high dimensional data both on the cloud and on prem. Currently they have focused on microscopy image storage optimization and in 2023 will be focused on supporting several other complex data types as our modalities evolve.

The Experience You’ll Need

• Significant experience as a software engineer or data engineer and excitement for deeply engaging in technical discussions and decisions your team is making.
• Experience leading technical teams using both technical and interpersonal skills to achieve results.
• A people-first mindset. Despite the deadlines, we always prioritize supporting our coworkers in their growth and experience.
• Demonstrate past record of learning from and teaching peers in areas of performance, scalability, and system architecture.
• Experience working across a business on highly collaborative projects.
• Excitement to learn parts of our tech stack that you might not already know. Our current tech stack includes: Python, Clojure, dbt, Airflow, Big Query, Postgres, GCP Buckets. Our cloud services are provided by Google Cloud Platform.
