Your Responsibilities

 

The Director HSE, based at either our Torrance or Vista, CA facility, is responsible for team member health & safety and environmental compliance across both sites at Bachem Americas and is charged with establishing and maintaining a strong safety and environmental compliance culture throughout the organization.  The individual in this position utilizes their extensive knowledge to assure compliance and ensures that safety and environmental hazards are identified, associated risks are assessed, and appropriate actions are implemented to mitigate or eliminate risks.  This individual leads, manages and develops the HSE team, ensuring that the team has the necessary skillsets and expertise either internally or through external sources to fulfill all HSE responsibilities to properly address hazards at Bachem. 

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Establish and maintain a strong safety culture at Bachem that continually identifies hazards and evaluates risks, and further determines and executes needed improvements to mitigate or eliminate risks
  • Work closely with the Site Managers to ensure achievement of Bachem’s CSR goals, including the definition and implementation of respective measures and changes.
  • Provide leadership and guidance throughout the organization as the primary champion of health & safety and environmental compliance.
  • Assure compliance with all federal, state and local HSE regulatory requirements, including compliance with applicable controlled substances regulations, while assuring fulfillment of Bachem’s business objectives
  • Monitor development of HSE regulatory requirements and industry standards, and ensure practical application of these requirements and standards at Bachem
  • Develop and implement an HSE roadmap with emphasis on the development of a strong safety culture at Bachem
  • Establish effective HSE metrics and report results at different levels of the organizations, as appropriate.
  • Assure effective HSE training is provided as necessary at all levels and functions of the organization
  • Ensure that accidents and incidents are fully investigated and include root cause analysis with associated corrective actions that are addressed.
  • Provide leadership, development, coaching and support to achieve HSE objectives within Bachem.  Where internal expertise is not available, identify external resources that can be accessed, as needed.
  • Served as primary point of contact for evaluating, establishing, assessing and monitoring occupational exposure categorization for new NCE projects, in compliance with internal and industry guidelines.  Served as an in-house subject matter expert for engineering in facility design and upgrades to enhance occupational exposure best practices
  • Serve as Bachem’s primary HSE contact and representative with regulatory authorities and customers, fostering good relationships with both
  • Contribute to the budgeting process, and diligently monitor and control HSE expenses and use of resources.
  • Assure that Bachem has emergency management procedures in place, and that roles and responsibilities are assigned and understood.
  • Constructively collaborate with HSE colleagues in the Bachem Group to leverage knowhow and capabilities as well as to develop and implement Bachem Group HSE standards

 

Leadership & Development of the EHS Organization

 

  • Provide leadership and continuous development opportunities to the HSE team members, assuring the HSE function is able to fulfill current and future challenges.
  • Establish priorities, set goals, monitor performance and provide ongoing and timely feedback to the HSE team.
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

 

Your Profile

 

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a science or engineering discipline, and a minimum of 10 years of pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing industry experience, 5 years of HSE experience, and 3 years of managerial leadership experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful track record of responsibility, accountability and initiative in a leadership position with the ability to lead, motivate and mentor others
  • Extensive knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations applicable to Bachem's business, as well as the federal, state and local governmental bodies with regulatory oversight of Bachem, including but not limited to Cal-OSHA and EPA
  • Pharmaceutical Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) knowledge and experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and implement pragmatic solutions
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment skills and experience, with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with stakeholders to mitigate or eliminate risks
  • Project management skills, with the ability to develop action plans and execute in a multi-stakeholder, fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of success as an influencer, including the ability to motivate and manage individuals and teams without having direct authority
  • Ability to communicate in a proactive and solution-focused manner, at all levels in the organization, both with individuals and in large group settings
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with standard MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability and willingness to be physically present at both the Torrance and Vista sites on a weekly basis, and to travel internationally, as needed, to collaborate with Bachem colleagues around the world.

 

Preferred

 

  • Experience working at a CMO
  • Technical experience in drug substance manufacturing

Salary Range: $118,484 - $162,916

 

Placement of new hires in the wage range is based on several factors including education, skill sets, experience, and training.
