SUMMARY

The Associate Director, IT position will provide leadership to oversee, manage and develop the Center of Excellence that creates, maintains, enhances and supports internally developed applications that support AbbVie’s R&D organization. Key objectives include management of vendor resources, development and enforcement of technology standards used by the COE, management of the use of the DevOps platform by the COE, oversight and continuous improvement of the agile methodology used by the COE, financial management the COE, and management of the COE demand backlog. The position will work directly with Finance, Security, Architecture and Executive IT management to establish COE financial management, COE security adherence, architectural and tech debt management, and COE demand management.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage a programming center of excellence comprised of several development pods of external developers, scrum leads and other agile roles.
  • Manage the financial targets of the COE, including monthly targets, project targets, vendor resource costs, and cost efficiency per development hour
  • Develop, enforce and continuously improve programming standards for UI, interface and other libraries used as codebase standards used by the COE pods.
  • Manage operations meetings and escalations with product owners and scrum masters related to issues that arise during ongoing COE operations.
  • Serve as a COE representative for other touchpoints into the COE, including technology vendors, business leads and business analysts within IT
  • Manage the demand pipeline including providing oversight to demand estimation, facilitating prioritization meetings, and providing periodic updates to IT executive management
  • Oversee and continuously improve the deployment and usage of Devops tools, including code management, code inspection, pipeline automation and test automation, used by the COE development pods.
  • Oversee and continuously improve the Agile methodology used by the COE, including observing and instituting improvements to the mechanics of this COE’s Agile implementation

REQUIREMENTS

    Bachelor's Degree or higher with 9+ years’ experience in project management, business systems analysis, software development or deployment, with a minimum of 9 years managing projects, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years managing IT delivery teams.

Key competencies include:

  • Knowledge of Agile application development methodology
  • Knowledge and experience in an Agile role such as scrum master, developer, product owner, etc.
  • Knowledge of DevOps platforms such as GitHub, SonarQube, Azure Pipelines, Tosca test automation, etc.
  • Knowledge and expertise in outsourcing and management of off-shore or near-shore development resources
