Job Details

AbbVie’s Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports both Discovery and Development. The GRC goal is to develop world class genetics and genomics research focused on finding the right therapeutic targets and helping AbbVie scientists better understand not only human disease biology but also the behavior and response to our drugs in clinical trials across all therapeutic areas. We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Scientist II in Stem Cell Biology with expertise in iPSc reprogramming and differentiation to support iPSc-based disease modeling and drug testing capabilities.

This position will enable the implementation of patient-derived iPSc-based models across AbbVie, and will develop innovative solutions in discovery and validation of new therapeutic targets through the implementation and utilization of cutting-edge science and state-of-the-art equipment to address gene function and causal variants. Applicants should have expertise in iPSc-based models in an industrial setting, and should have broad laboratory expertise in genomics, gene targeting, cellular and molecular biology techniques. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential as the candidate is expected to operate in a highly paced and multi-disciplined environment. The candidate must be able to lead and supervise multiple research projects.

Expertise in stem cell biology, iPSc reprogramming, the functional evaluation of coding/noncoding sequences utilizing modified iPSc, and differentiation to various cell types relevant to diseases across AbbVie’s portfolio is required. Experience in 3D differentiations, organoids, and large-scale iPSc culture is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build an AbbVie-wide iPSc repository to facilitate the implementation of patient-derived iPSc models across AbbVie
  • Establish protocols for robust iPSc reprogramming and directed differentiation of patient-derived iPSc to model a variety of cell types and diseases.
  • Develop and maintain a broad scientific network across AbbVie to develop strategies and enable implementation of iPSc-based models across AbbVie’s therapeutic and functional areas.
  • Develop and implement functional assays on the cell level in iPSc-based models.
  • Develop iPSC disease models by reprogramming patient primary cells or introducing disease-driver mutations using for example CRISPR-Cas9 technology.
  • Develop 3D differentiation protocols and large-scale iPSc culture using bioreactors and automation.
  • Write publications, and present results at internal and external scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program.
  • Provide scientific leadership to develop creative/innovative cell-based assays to discover new targets and innovative application of engineered cells to enhance internal capabilities.
  • Mentor and supervise a team of one or more and guide and evaluate the performance of those individuals; is accountable for effective performance of the team

Qualifications:

Position will be hired based on level of education and experience.

  • PhD in the field of stem cell biology and gene editing with 4+ years postgraduate experience in iPSc.
  • Expertise working with diverse primary and modified cell lines exposed to different stressors.
  • Expertise in molecular/cellular techniques, including iPSc reprogramming, iPSc CRISPR editing, iPSc differentiation, 3D differentiation, cell sorting, cell transfection and transduction, Western blot, qRT-PCR, gel shift, ELISA, lentivirus.
  • Expertise in differentiation of patient-derived iPSc to disease relevant cell types and employing those iPSc-based models to study disease mechanisms
  • Experience using gene editing tools (CRISPR, TALEN, or ZFN).
  • Publication record demonstrating required expertise as first author in high-impact peer reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in mentoring and supervising team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify business needs, and to independently build and maintain scientific collaborations with stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • 1+ year experience in implementing iPSc-based models in industry, with demonstrated growth potential.
  • Expertise in cellular and genomic analyses including functional evaluation of coding and noncoding DNA sequences.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills.
  • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, and integrity.
  • Global mindset to thrive in a diverse culture and environment.
