Moderna is seeking a passionate, rigorous scientist and proven leader for our Delivery Science organization, charged with leading and continuously evolving the Moderna delivery platform to enable growth of our vaccine and therapeutic pipeline. The Executive Director of Delivery Science will build and drive the delivery discovery strategy, from conceptualization to execution. The Executive Director will lead a large team, fostering a collaborative team environment where individuals at all levels are empowered to challenge the science, demonstrate curiosity, and relentlessly pursue advancements. As a member of the Platform Leadership Team, the Executive Director will work with their fellow Platform leaders to ensure we define and implement an integrated research strategy to advance Modernas platform technology, exploring new scientific avenues to expand our modalities as well as constantly improving the performance of technology utilized in our existing pipeline. In partnering with cross-functional leaders in the organization, such as with Technical Development and Therapeutic Area Research, the candidate will define the critical needs and priorities for inventing and sustaining robust delivery technologies for pipeline success.
Heres What Youll Do:
Define and execute against our delivery strategy, advancing both fundamental understanding and applied aspects of formulation science to invent and advance into clinical development delivery vehicles for multiple nucleic acid cargos and cell targets
Lead an organization of high performing formulation scientists who value working in a diverse and fast paced environment, sharing the broader vision for our platform technology and inspiring scientists at all levels with commitment to our mission
As a member of the Platform Leadership Ship, guide our broader Platform Research strategy, reaching areas beyond your subject matter expertise, to achieve integrated performance of our platform technology that will enable pursuit of new modalities and increase the benefit to patients of programs in our current portfolio
Reinforce a culture that values respectful scientific debate, drives toward decision-making experiments, obsesses over learning from unexpected results, and celebrates both Go and No-Go decisions
Prioritize resources, manage functional budget, and identify opportunities for leverage with investment in automation and digitalization
Collaborate with Technical Development to accelerate technology transfer and provide scientific input where relevant on process improvements and approaches to scale by Technical Development colleagues based on fundamental technology understanding and continued research efforts
Collaborate with Non-Clinical Sciences and Therapeutic Area Research to align strategy and enable rapid testing of new technology in translational setting
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the drug delivery field, identify potential external collaborators, and externally communicate on our technology through scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications
Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:
Ph.D. in chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, biomedical engineering, or related field with 15+ years of industry experience in a pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology environment
Experience with LNP technology
Experience leading and managing teams in a highly matrixed organization
Track record of progressing discovery innovations into clinical development
Experience in formulation discovery, biotechnology/pharmaceutical development, and delivery of novel drug modalities
Proficiency in fundamentals of drug development, including pharmacology and DMPK
Ability to effectively collaborate in a cross-functional matrix environment
Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including a strong publication track record
Ability to manage multiple projects in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment
