Directs, executes, and provides oversight of animal care use program including veterinary care, vivarium operations, facility maintenance and renovations, research support and collaboration, and staff training and development for the use of animals in biomedical research. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide oversight of all research animals, facility operations, and management; consult and liaison with research scientists; act as a leader within the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
  • Develop long- and short-term strategies to align Comparative Medicine operations with AbbVie’s strategic direction for drug discovery and development
  • Encourage innovation through leadership and collaboration with research scientists at all Abbvie research sites
  • Instill the culture of care, incorporating the 3 R’s of Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction in the daily decision-making of the program.
  • Contribute to the development of the staff, encourage innovation and recognize both accomplishments and shortcomings of staff members in order to proactively reward or implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Assure the health of all animals received within the facilities through monitoring vendor selection, approving animal sources, and generally compliance to AbbVie standards.
  • Communicate clearly and frequently to staff, senior leadership, and research scientists on issues related to animal health, animal welfare, appropriate management practices, and scientific excellence and integrity
  • Achieve and/or maintain AAALAC accreditation and (when appropriate) compliance with USDA regulations and/or local regulations

Requirements:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from American Veterinary Medical Association accredited institution
  • Licensure or ability to achieve licensure to practice veterinary medicine within the United States
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification with at least 8 years of laboratory animal experience with appropriate knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal medicine
  • Knowledge of requirements and experience in obtaining and/or maintaining AAALAC accreditation
  • Ability to communicate with regulators, technical staff, senior leaders, and research scientists clearly and appropriately
  • Solid people management skills aligning with the AbbVie Ways We Work leadership attributes.
  • Experience in problem solving, challenging the status quo, taking risks and making unpopular decisions.
  • Proven expertise in identifying key issues, trends, and cause/effects as they impact the business while encouraging and providing opportunities to share knowledge by providing expertise on all internal collaborations.
