DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking a protein purification scientist to be part of a well-integrated discovery team. As a member AbbVie’s Biologics Discovery Sciences group, you will play a key role in the production and characterization of antibody-based molecules and collaborate with Oncology Discovery scientists to deliver differentiated best-in-class biologics. The candidate will be a highly motivated scientist with an established track record in biochemistry, molecular biology, and protein production. The successful candidate will be expected to work with other scientists within BDS, across functions and different therapeutic areas (Virology, Neurosciences, Immunology and Oncology) to discover and develop next generation biologics through interrogation and engineering of protein attributes. This position is based at our brand new state-of-the-art South San Francisco campus.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Understand and execute processes for the expression, purification, and characterization of protein biotherapeutics.
  • Plan experimental approaches with minor supervisory guidance.  Discuss, troubleshoot, recommend, and modify experimental techniques as needed.
  • Develop and perform intact/reduced liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methods and analysis.
  • Collaborate cross-department to come up with the most effective approach to meet the demands of biologic development
  • Champion new technologies to achieve project goals.
  • Communicate and actively engage with discovery scientists, collaborators, and outside vendors.

 

 


QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Scientist I  - BS or MS degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or related technical discipline with 5+ (BS), 2+ (MS) years of relevant experience in academic or biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting
  • Scientist II  - BS or MS degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or related technical discipline with 7+ (BS), 5+ (MS) years of relevant experience in academic or biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting
  • A proven record of success in the expression, purification, and characterization of mammalian proteins, including antibodies, antibody fragments, and novel protein constructs
  • Experience with sterile technique and handling multiple cell lines in support of transient expression platforms (e.g., HEK293 and CHO)
  • Experience in the use of various chromatography and purification systems (protein A/G, SEC, mixed-mode with AKTA systems), and analytical instruments (Agilent HPLC, Waters UPLC and LC/MS, SDS-PAGE)
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance protein production capabilities through identification of key technology improvements, innovation, and/or problem solving
  • Independently perform reduced LC-MS analyses of AbbVie’s biologics to provide sequence verification, post-translational modification profiles, sequence variant levels, and disulfide bond profiles
  • Experience working in highly collaborative environment and the ability to work with others to set and meet organizational goals.
