We are currently searching for a Laboratory Manager with the leadership skills and experience to successfully establish and manage a new research laboratory to support the overall operational objectives of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). This position will require interaction with people at various levels throughout NIH.  Experience with government, preferably NIH, purchasing and procurement processes is preferred.  This a full-time, onsite opportunity in Rockville, MD. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead the effort to build-out a new laboratory facility
  • Assist with management of after-hours emergencies (e.g., equipment)
  • Manage chemical biological waste procedures local processes
  • Prepare and manage animal ethics applications and establish local processes to ensure adherence to approved project requirement
  • Manage laboratory equipment (e.g., servicing and maintenance, development of training protocols)
  • Ensure adequate supply of laboratory reagents
  • Organize and store all chemicals and laboratory reagents according to safety requirements
  • Maintain animal records database, perform mouse genotyping and recording
  • Train new staff and students; Assist others in the team as required to optimize the units research effort
  • Develop laboratory safety protocols, manage training and related records; Development of new protocols to support section’s mission
  • Prepare and manage of animal ethics applications
  • Create/Manage electronic databases (animal tissues, antibodies, reagents etc.); organize animal records/database
  • Organize lab meetings seminars; organize section meetings/seminars and external guests

Requirements

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology or related field
  • At least 4 years of experience

Skills:

  • Project management and leadership skills
  • Experience with establishing a new laboratory facility
  • Well-organized, able to multi-task
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in government, preferably NIH, procurement
  • Self-starter
  • Team player, able to work across the organization
  • Animal handling
  • MS Office, specifically PowerPoint, Access, Outlook
