Job Description:

Summary/objective:

The ideal candidate will provide expertise and experience in extracting targets from variety of clinical matrices, with a focus on technological solutions that can be used in resource-limited settings.  Successful candidates will join a tam of innovative scientists that are laser focused on improving human health worldwide by making molecular diagnostics accessible outside of traditional laboratory settings.

Essential functions:

  • Develop reagents and methods to access target molecules that are compatible with Sherlock’s various downstream detection technologies
  • Integrate developed sample preparation technologies into point-of-care platforms and consumables
  • Independently plan, design, optimize and execute experiments
  • Contribute towards the development of new assays targeting pathogens of interest
  • May supervise and mentor junior scientists and researchers
  • Provide data summaries, written reports and oral presentations to both internal and external teams
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with other scientists, chemists, engineers and manufacturing personnel

Supervisory responsibilities:  

  • This position may have supervisory or mentor responsibilities

 Work environment:

  • This position will work in the office and the lab. Work with BSL-2 level pathogens will be required. Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment must be worn in the lab

 Physical demands:

  • Long periods of sitting and standing
  • Must wear a mask during the day
  • Must be capable of working in a lab environment for at least 40 hours/week

 Travel required:

  • Less than 10%

 Required education and experience:

  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering, biology, chemistry or related area with 0 - 3+ years post-doctoral experience desired, or M.S. in Bioengineering or Life Sciences with minimum of 6 years industry experience
  • Experience extracting cells, virus, or nucleic acids from a variety of clinical matrices, with experience working with blood as a matrix highly desired
  • Practical experience in the development of in-vitro diagnostics device desired
  • Technical aptitude to learn new scientific applications quickly
  • Creative problem solver with a can-do attitude
