The Role:

The Infectious Diseases group at Moderna is seeking a talented, experienced, and motivated Associate Director with a deep expertise in innate and adaptive immunity, immune assay development, and animal modeling. The candidate will be part of a team responsible for developing and applying an array of innate and adaptive immune assays to mechanistically dissect the correlates of immunity induced by mRNA vaccines against an array of pathogens. The candidate must have extensive experience and knowledge of viruses ranging from BL1 to BL4 pathogens and have several years of experience in immune evaluation of natural and vaccine induced immune responses. The candidate will oversee a team that will evaluate current and develop future opportunities to use mRNA vaccines to modulate immunity across tissues, cell types, and innate pathways. This work will include the design, development, and execution of studies aimed at improving the quality, durability, and compartment immune response. This work also seeks to define the molecular mechanisms and unexplored opportunities to tune novel facets of immunity. The candidate will interface with collaborators and present results both internally and externally. The ability to effectively communicate across internal multi-disciplinary teams and with external partners is required. Applicants should be outstanding scientists, collaborative team members, excellent communicators, and should be excited to work with cutting edge mRNA technology in the advancement of vaccines against unmet infectious and non-infectious disease threats.

Here's What Youll Do:

  • Establish novel immune profiling assays.

  • Establish an automated pipeline for immune assay analysis.

  • Integrate both innate and adaptive immune principles in mRNA induced immune evaluation.

  • Develop pathogen specific assays.

  • Develop animal modeling for mRNA sensing and programming.

  • Develop cross-species analyses.

  • Lead a team seeking to bridge in vitro and in vivo analysis of mRNA vaccines.

  • Assist in the identification of new targets for vaccine intervention and/or identification of novel approaches that utilize the mRNA platform in the development of new or better vaccines.

  • Develop relations with pre-clinical CROs and review pre-clinical immunology results

  • Review literature for relevant immune screening approaches and for new technology with application to infectious disease research.

  • Manage multiple experiments, projects, and interactions with supporting functions simultaneously.

Heres What Youll Bring to the Table:

  • Exceptional PhD with expertise in virology, immunology and molecular biology is required.

  • 5-10 years of independent research experience in biotech or academia is required.

  • Strong level of understanding of pathogen-specific assay development.

  • Strong level of understanding of animal modeling.

  • Expertise in antibody assays, flow based assays, and pathogen-restriction assays will be a plus.

  • Contributions to high impact publications and presentations in the field of immunology or vaccinology.

  • The ability to work in a cross-functional work environment is critical; strong leadership skills and independence skills are expected.

  • Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills; ability to influence and collaborate in a team environment.

  • Candidate will be curious in exploring new path for drug discovery, bold in proposing creative experimental designs and ideas. Will work collaboratively with multifunctional teams and will be relentless in pursuing successful outcomes.
