The Role

Moderna is seeking an experienced, strategic and highly creative individual to lead its global digital communications and social media marketing efforts. This person will serve as Executive Director, Digital Communications with responsibility for digital and social communications across Modernas enterprise and commercial operations. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Media, the Executive Director, Digital Communications is a key member of the Brand & Communications team.

The incumbent will develop robust, integrated digital communications strategies that drive engagement and enhance Modernas reputation while achieving marketing campaign and corporate goals. The ideal candidate will understand how to use digital platforms to strategically build brands, create attention and generate user advocacy on a global scale. The incumbent is expected to coordinate the strategy implementation globally of Modernas social media channels and digital communications capabilities. This individual must be able to work cooperatively with other internal stakeholders across Moderna, including business leads, product development and global teams, while helping to install the infrastructure for the team to operate at a rapid pace. They will work in close collaboration with the local social media managers that sit in the biggest markets to ensure consistency when implementing campaigns and tracking performance, while allowing for customization according to the local business needs.

The ideal candidate will have global experience, with a track record of proven success in successfully partnering with the brand, media and PR teams to ensure that digital communications are effectively integrated into brand marketing and paid media efforts. This role is based in Cambridge, MA.

Heres What Youll Do

  • Develop and manage a broad strategy to innovate and set world-class standards for digital communications and social media marketing across the globe

  • Own the development of a strategic social media marketing plan and its associated budget across campaigns and channels

  • Provide inspirational and creative ways to reach and gain attention of target audiences

  • Establish repeatable operational methodologies and mechanisms that enable fast and responsive content development and distribution

  • Formulate and implement best-practices, mechanisms and measurement tools that provide enhanced opportunities to engage audiences and leverage the benefits of individual social media platforms

  • Identify and implement strategic opportunities to enhance Modernas digital communication footprint and elevate its corporate profile globally

  • Oversee the management of global enterprise social channels and execution of the social content strategy

  • Monitor effectiveness and performance of all digital channels by applying data/analytics and insights to inform, improve and adjust digital strategy accordingly

  • Provide regular reports on relevant KPIs across all digital campaigns, with recommendations for ongoing and future campaigns

  • Ensure thorough compliance of digital content by collaborating with Legal, Global Ethics and Compliance, Pharmacovigilance and Regulatory teams

  • Advise internal stakeholders on social media best practices, socialize innovative ideas

  • Manage external vendors/agencies on select projects

  • Ensure Modernas voice and brand is consistent across channels and campaigns

  • Evaluate emerging digital technologies and best practices; make recommendations for adoption when appropriate

  • Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time

Heres What Youll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Strong educational foundation and preference for MBA or similar graduate degree.

  • A minimum of 15 years of experience working in corporate communications, digital or social strategy related function, with a deep understanding of social media strategy, ideally gained through experience in both an agency and an in-house setting.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in healthcare or pharmaceutical industry strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated understanding of social media platforms, their unique audiences and how to use them to maximize branding and marketing efforts

  • Expertise in integrated digital communications and campaign planning, including development, execution, and measurement strategies in the healthcare industry

  • Demonstrated experience in crafting integrated, multi-channel digital strategies at a global scale, with a deep understanding of audiences and channels

  • Experience working with C-suite level executives and proven record of building and maintaining stakeholder relationships within teams, across the business, with senior leaders and external agencies

  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Experience and understanding of multi-cultural, multi-country/region businesses is required

  • Demonstrated understanding/experience with international regulatory requirements is a strong plus

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment

  • Highly creative and strategic mindset; anticipating future business and competitive risks and looking for creative solutions and opportunities.

  • Demonstrated business acumen and strong analytical skills

  • Strong executive presence and the ability to interact confidently with the Modernas Executive Committee members is required, coupled with the ability to explain complex matters in a simple way that is easily understood.

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple matters simultaneously, in a fast-paced environment, and to respond quickly, clearly and pragmatically to urgent situations and rapidly shifting priorities in ambiguous or challenging situations
