PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNL) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by the prime contractor Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. FNL is responsible for pursuing a unique mission in translational and applied biomedical research that is unsuitable for academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or other federal contractors. The selected candidate will join the Natural Products Support Group located at the NCI-Frederick campus.

The Natural Products Support Group (NPSG) provides scientific and technical support to the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) of the NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD). The group is comprised of several laboratories responsible for various natural product-based support activities including extraction of plant, microbial, and marine biota; pre-fractionation of natural product extracts; isolation and identification of biologically active natural products; preforming cryopreservations and microbial fermentations; and in-vitro and in-vivo drug preparations.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Performing a wide range of scientific support studies, with an emphasis on the isolation of biologically active natural products identified in high-throughput screens. The responsibilities will include:

• Isolation and structure elucidation of active components from plant, marine and microbial extracts
• Methods development towards dereplication of the active principles from natural product fractions
  
• Maintaining chemistry laboratory instrumentation, including liquid chromatography systems, mass spectrometers, and an NMR spectrometer
  

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

• Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, pharmacology or a related discipline from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation(CHEA)
• Foreign degrees will be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
• Knowledge of chromatographic media and separation techniques used to purify chemical compounds
• Experience with HPLC, NMR and MS instrumentation is a plus
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
• Excellent communication skills and a capacity to work in a team environment
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

• Experience with HPLC, NMR and MS
• Experience with natural products
• Ability to maintain laboratory equipment

The Postbac Program is for individuals who meet any ONE of the following criteria:

• College graduates who received their bachelor's degrees less than THREE years prior to the date they begin the program
• Individuals who are more than 3 years past the receipt of their bachelor's degree but received a master's degree less than SIX MONTHS before they begin the program, OR
• Students who have been accepted into graduate, other doctoral, or medical school programs and who have written permission from their school to delay entrance for up to one year to pursue a biomedical research project at the NIH
